Ebook "Inflammation and cancer: Methods and protocols" expands on the previous edition with an update on the broad spectrum of research models, techniques, and protocols used in laboratories by basic and clinical researchers. The chapters in this book are divided into two parts. Part One discusses the latest findings on the development and characterization of representative research models for chronic immune-based diseases and inflammation-associated cancers.

Chronic diarrhea is a common chief complaint in the pediatric population with a wide range of diagnostic differentials; as such, whilst suspecting common causes, less prevalent conditions tend to be overlooked, such as neuroendocrine tumor pathologies. VIPomas are characterized by hypersecretion of the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP), causing watery diarrhea, hypokalemia, and achlorhydria.

Lymphangiomas are lesions attributed to congenital malformations of the lymphatic system, or acquired chronic obstruction of the lymphatic network due to trauma, radiation, surgical manipulation, inflammation, or infection. Overall, lymphangiomas are rare, and particularly, retroperitoneal lymphangiomas are far more uncommon per reported cases.

Pathophysiology of transformation of inflammatory lesions in chronic pancreatitis (CP) to pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is not clear. Methods: We conducted a systematic review, meta-analysis of circulating metabolites, integrated this data with transcriptome analysis of human pancreatic tissues and validated using immunohistochemistry. Our aim was to establish biomarker signatures for early malignant transformation in patients with underlying CP and identify therapeutic targets.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), one of the most lethal malignancies, is increasing in incidence. However, the stromal reaction pathophysiology and its role in PDAC development remain unknown. We, therefore, investigated the potential role of histological chronic pancreatitis findings and chronic inflammation on surgical PDAC specimens and disease-specific survival (DSS).

Macrophage inhibitory cytokine 1 (MIC-1/GDF15) has been identified as a potential novel biomarker for detection of pancreatic cancer (PCa). However, the diagnostic value of serum MIC-1 for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), particularly for those at the early stage, and the value for treatment response monitoring have not yet been investigated.

We explored if known risk factors for pancreatic cancer such as type II diabetes and chronic inflammation, influence the pathophysiology of an established primary tumor in the pancreas and if administration of metformin has an impact on tumor growth.

Nuclear factor E2 related factor-2 (Nrf2) is an oxidative stress inducible transcription factor being essential in regulating cell homeostasis. Thus, acute induction of Nrf2 in epithelial cells exposed to inflammation confers protection from oxidative cell damage and mutagenesis supporting an anti-tumorigenic role for Nrf2.

Inflammation is associated with cancer but there are conflicting reports on associations of biomarkers of inflammation with cancer risk and mortality. We investigated the associations of C-reactive protein (CRP) and leukocyte count with cancer risk and mortality using individual biomarkers, and an inflammatory score derived from both biomarkers.

Pancreaticopleural fistula (PPF) is a very rare and critical complication of pancreatitis in children. The majority of publications relevant to PPF are case reports. No pooled analyses of PPF cases are available. Little is known about the pathogenesis and optimal therapeutic schedule.

Tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) is a candidate diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Here, we determined the possible association of systemic TIMP-1 levels with cachexia and jaundice, two common PDAC-associated conditions.

In adults ERCP and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) are standard methods of evaluating and treating many hepatopancreaticobiliary (HPB) conditions. HPB disease is being diagnosed with increasing frequency in children but information about role of ERCP and EUS and their outcomes in this population remain limited.

Chronic pancreatitis (CP) is a benign inflammatory disease involving the progressive and irreversible destruction of the pancreatic tissue, fibrosis and loss of exocrine and endocrine function. Clinical management of CP is also challenging because of the incomplete understanding of disease and pain pathogenesis.

The rising costs of health care pose a formidable challenge for policymakers. Health care already accounts for 16% of the gross domestic product (GDP) and is projected to increase to 25% by 2025. According to the Congressional Budget Office, spending on health care is likely to accelerate because of an aging population, a rising burden of chronic diseases, and higher costs for pharmaceuticals and other treatments. 2,3 Increased spending will only exacerbate current stresses on the economy, employers, government programs, and the public.
