B chromosomes (Bs) are additional chromosomal elements found in a wide range of eukaryotes including fungi, plants and animals. B chromosomes are still enigmatic despite being the subject of hundreds, even thousands of reports. As yet there is no comprehensive theory for the biological role of B chromsomes thus, new studies are needed.

The factors determining sex are diverse in vertebrates and especially so in teleost fishes. Only a handful of master sex-determining genes have been identified, however great efforts have been undertaken to characterize the subsequent genetic network of sex differentiation in various organisms.

The Major Histocompatibility Complex (MHC) is a key component of the adaptive immune system of all vertebrates and consists of the most polymorphic genes known to date. Due to this complexity, however, MHC remains to be characterized in many species including any Neotropical cichlid fish.

Post-transcriptional regulation is crucial for the control of eukaryotic gene expression and might contribute to adaptive divergence. The three prime untranslated regions (3’ UTRs), that are located downstream of protein-coding sequences, play important roles in post-transcriptional regulation. These regions contain functional elements that influence the fate of mRNAs and could be exceptionally important in groups such as rapidly evolving cichlid fishes.

Telmatochromis temporalis is a cichlid fish endemic to Lake Tanganyika. The normal and dwarf morphs of this fish are a clear example of ongoing ecological speciation, and body size plays an important role in this speciation event as a magic trait. However, the genetic basis underlying this trait has not been studied.

Differential gene expression can be translated into differing phenotypic traits. Especially during embryogenesis, specific gene expression networks regulate the development of different body structures. Cichlid fishes, with their impressive phenotypic diversity and propensity to radiate, are an emerging model system in the genomics era.

Successful social behavior requires real-time integration of information about the environment, internal physiology, and past experience. The molecular substrates of this integration are poorly understood, but likely modulate neural plasticity and gene regulation.

Comparative transcriptomics reveals candidate carotenoid color genes in an East African cichlid fish
Carotenoids contribute significantly to animal body coloration, including the spectacular color pattern diversity among fishes. Fish, as other animals, derive carotenoids from their diet. Following uptake, transport and metabolic conversion, carotenoids allocated to body coloration are deposited in the chromatophore cells of the integument.

B chromosomes (Bs) are extra elements observed in diverse eukaryotes, including animals, plants and fungi. Although Bs were first identified a century ago and have been studied in hundreds of species, their biology is still enigmatic. Recent advances in omics and big data technologies are revolutionizing the B biology field.

Sometimes a burst of diversification is accompanied by dramatic morphologi - cal evolution—an event known as an adaptive radiation. When the ancestors of Darwin’s finches arrived on the Galápagos Islands a few million years ago, they did not simply evolve into 14 barely distinguishable species. They evolved dis- tinctive beaks and behaviors that allowed them to feed on cactuses, crack hard nuts, and even drink the blood of other birds. The Great Lakes of East Africa also saw an adaptive radiation of cichlid fishes.
