CD147 is expressed in many tissues and is involved in many inflammatory diseases. Emerging evidence suggests that the overproduction of mucus is a malignant factor in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which results in severe airway obstruction and repeated airway infections.

Cigarette smoke induces a pro-inflammatory response in airway epithelial cells but it is not clear which of the various chemicals contained within cigarette smoke (CS) should be regarded as predominantly responsible for these effects.

IL-17A directly induces epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in alveolar epithelial cells. It could coordinate with cigarette smoke extract (CSE) to promote proliferation of bronchial epithelial cells. In this study, we aim to explore the direct effect of IL-17A and CSE on EMT in bronchial epithelial cells.

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is a major clinical disorder usually associated with cigarette smoking. A central feature of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is inflammation coexisting with an abnormal protease/anti-protease balance, leading to apoptosis and elastolysis. In anin vitro study of rat lung alveolar L2 cells, cigarette smoke extract (CSE) induced apoptotic cell death. Expo-sure of L2 cells to CSE at a concentration of 0.25% resulted in a 50% increase of caspase-3 and matrix met-alloproteinase (MMP) activities.

Studies assessing the role of ICTP levels in GCF or peri-implant crevicular fluid as a diagnostic marker of periodontal disease activity have reported promising results so far (Oringer et al. 1998, 2002). ICTP was suggested to predict future bone loss, to correlate with clinical parameters and putative periodontal pathogens and also to reduce following periodontal therapy (Giannobile 1999).
