Impact of clay mineralogy on stabilization of soil organic carbon for long-term carbon sequestration
One of the largest sinks of organic carbon on the global scale is the organic matter stored in soils, it contains about 1500 Gt C in the top one meter. Changes in the size and the turnover rate of the soil carbon pools could possibly have an effect on the atmospheric CO2 concentration and the global climate. Stabilization of soil organic C (SOC) is pre-requisite for long-term C sequestration to mitigate climate change. Stabilization of SOC means the decrease in the potential loss of organic C by microbial respiration, erosion or leaching.

Mineralogy of clay fractions and characteristics of Groundnut growing soils developed from granite-gneiss parent material in Srikalahasti division in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh were studied. The clay fraction of these soils exhibited the characteristic peaks of smectite, illite and kaolinite. Semi-quantification of clay fractions based on relative areas under corresponding peaks indicated that the pedon 3 and 6 was dominated by kaolinite followed by illite, smectite and Quartz.

The coal samples spectra on FTIR analysis indicated the coals are classified into bituminous in rank. XRD analysis of coal shows minerals content on coal samples are clays minerals (kaolinite, smectite), silicate minerals (quartz, sericite, plagioclase and mica), carbonates (calcite, siderite), sulphate (anhydrite) and sulphides (pyrite).

Mineralogical study was carried using XRD analysis of six representative pedons of two horizones (Ap andBw) developed over granitegneissin Kanaginahala subwatershed to describe the mineralogical composition of sand and clay fractions. The slope of the study area ranged from 1 to 3 per cent with moderate to severe erosion, soil colour was dark grayish brown (2.5 Y 4/2) tovery dark gray (10 YR 3/1), texture was clay in all the pedons. The pH was neutral to moderately alkaline (pH 7.55 to 8.32), with ECnonsaline (0.15 to 0.54 dSm-1 ) and organic carbon low to high range(2.82 to 9.02 g kg-1 ).

The variability in water retention in soil is primarily attributable to soil texture which is mainly responsible for pore geometry and discontinuity, when compared to soil mineralogy. Under field conditions soil moisture variability is a major constraint for proper soil water management. In the present study, a pot experiment was conducted with an objective of assessing the effect of soil texture on moisture content and its depletion rate. For this purpose, the soils of seven variable textures were pre saturated and allowed to follow a drying period up to 15 days.

A major nutritional problem to crops grown in highly weathered Brazilian soils is phosphorus (P) deficiencies linked to their low availability and the capacity of the soils to fix P in insoluble forms. Our studies examined factors that might influence P behavior in soils of the Amazon region.

Micromorphological observations from 3 different published works have been studied to aid understanding of aggregation and of colloids, both unique to soils. Saprolites in Hong Kong included ‘veins’ of different thicknesses and colours. Optical mineralogy identified them as infill from the neogenesis of clays in rock fractures.

Geochemical and mineralogical studies of palaeosols provide essential information for palaeoclimatic and palaeoenvironmental interpretation of continental deposits and can present a proxy for palaeoclimate. Red clays in the central Carpathian Basin (Hungary) (Tengelic Red Clay Formation; Kerecsend Red Clay Formation), overlain by loess–palaeosol sequences, were studied.

The mineralogy and geochemistry of volcaniclastic sediments in the southeastern part of the Arapgir area (Malatya) were studied by optical microscopy, XRD, SEM, ICP-AES, and MS techniques. Samples were collected from the marine and lacustrine deposits of the Dibekli and Böğürlüdağ sections that contained calcite, clay minerals, feldspar, quartz, dolomite, and opal.

The results of the combined application of a series of analytical methods (clay mineralogy, vitrinite reflectance, Raman microspectroscopy) placed tight constraints on the thermal evolution of the Karakaya Complex of northern Anatolia, a mostly Permo−Triassic subduction-accretion complex resulting from the progressive closure of the Palaeotethys.

Integrated mineralogical and geochemical methods are utilized to investigate the provenance, paleoweathering, and depositional setting of shale from the Lower Triassic Beduh Formation in the Northern Thrust Zone, Iraq. The ~64-m-thick Beduh Formation consists of calcareous shale and marl intercalations with thin calcareous sandstone interbeds.

The conversion of smectite to illite has long been studied by numerous researchers because of its importance as a diagenetic metric. Interpreting the pressure, temperature, and age of the sequences in which this conversion occurs provides the possibility to identify the historical maturation parameters of hydrocarbon sources.

Thermal muds have been used in many spas for the treatment of different diseases as well as to clean and beautify the skin and in different forms such as mud baths, masks, and cataplasms. Mineralogical and chemical compositions and the possible toxicity of the peloids were investigated and compared with some limits to determine whether they have any health benefits and potential applications for pelotherapeutic treatments.

Clay and clay minerals represent the youngest minerals in the Earth’s crust. Clays are irregularly distributed in lithosphere, as their concentration increases due to the weathering, hydrothermal changes, including anthropogenic influences. Clay minerals occur in all types of sediments and sedimentary rocks and are common in hydrothermal deposits. The interdisciplinary character of clay science follows from the information obtained from the methodology and theory of other natural and technical sciences....
