Aqueous sodium hydroxide solutions are extensively used as solvents for lignin in kraft pulping. These are also appealing systems for cellulose dissolution due to their inexpensiveness, ease to recycle and low toxicity. Cellulose dissolution occurs in a narrow concentration region and at low temperatures.

Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) dissolve in alkaline media, which limits their use in certain applications. Here, we report a delayed dissolution of SNPs in strong alkali induced by zinc oxide (ZnO), an additive which also limits gelation of alkaline cellulose solutions.

Corn stalk is a renewable natural resource that currently has limited industrial utilization. The objective of this study was to examine some chemical properties of corn stalk (holocellulose, α-cellulose, lignin and ash content, alcoholbenzene, hot and cold water solubility, and solubility in dilute alkali [1% NaOH]) and to evaluate its suitability for medium-density fiberboard (MDF) production.
