Bleeding in the postoperative period after cardiac surgery is relatively frequent, especially in patients with early anticoagulant therapy, as in the case of mechanical valve replacement. Defuse hemopericardium is relatively easy to diagnose; however, loculated pericardial hematomas leading to hemodynamic collapse are relatively rare and their diagnosis is more challenging.

Spontaneous coronary artery dissection (SCAD) is an idiosyncratic phenomenon by which a spontaneous separation of the intimal and medial layer in the coronary artery occurs with intramural hemorrhage in the absence of trauma. This intramural hematoma, in turn, leads to compression and occlusion of the arterial lumen.

Radiation therapy plays an important role in the treatment of lung cancer. Although adverse effects of radiation are well known, they are sometimes difficult to be diagnosed. We report a case of a radiationassociated vertebral compression fracture which mimicked bone metastasis of lung cancer.

The herniated disc is a condition in which the nucleus pulposus of the spinal disc breaks out of its normal position in the annulus, compressing the spinal canal or nerve roots, leading to a mechanical inflammatory response. We aimed to compare the spinal rehabilitation results of the CS-A15 exercise program with the Mc Kenzie exercises in patients with lumbar disc herniation.

Orthodontic treatment involves movement of teeth by compression and resorption of the alveolar bone using orthodontic forces. These movements are closely linked to the interactions between the teeth and the periodontal tissues that support them. Owing to an increase in adults seeking orthodontic treatment, orthodontists increasingly encounter patients with periodontal diseases, in whom orthodontic treatment is contraindicated. In rare cases, periodontitis may develop after treatment initiation.

Lower limb lymphedema (LLL) is one of the most refractory and debilitating complications related to gynecological cancer treatment. We investigated factors associated with response to compression-based physical therapy (CPT) for secondary LLL after gynecologic cancer treatment.

The number of hip fractures and resulting post-surgical outcome are a major public health concern and the incidence is expected to increase significantly. The acute recovery phase after hip fracture surgery in elder patients is often complicated by severe pain, high morphine consumption, perioperative blood loss with subsequent transfusion and delirium.

Compression therapy is commonly used to reduce lower limb swelling and blood loss after knee surgery. This study was performed to investigate whether modified Robert Jones bandage (MRJB) as a postoperative compression therapy is necessary for enhanced-recovery primary total knee arthroplasty without the tourniquet application.

Post-operative limb swelling may negatively affect the outcome of arthroscopic surgery and prolong rehabilitation. The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the effect of compression stockings versus no compression on post-operative swelling and pain in the early post-operative phase.

Pelvic lateral compression fractures are the most stable of the unstable fractures. Therefore, decision making regarding operative or non-operative therapy is still a matter of debate.

For metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC), conventional radiotherapy with 10 × 3 Gy in 2 weeks results in better local progression-free survival (LPFS) than 5 × 4 Gy in 1 week. Since patients with MSCC are often significantly impaired, an overall treatment time of 1 week would be preferable if resulting in similar outcomes as longer programs.

Venous leg ulcers are difficult to heal wounds. The basis of their physiotherapeutic treatment is compression therapy. However, for many years, the search for additional or other methods to supplement the treatment of venous ulcers, which would shorten the duration of treatment, is underway. One of such methods is the shockwave therapy.

A great number of patients have difficulty swallowing or needle fear. Therefore, buccal and orodispersible dosage forms (ODFs) represent an important strategy to enhance patient compliance. Besides not requiring water intake, swallowing or needles, these dosage forms allow drug release modulation. ODFs include oral lyophilizates or wafers, which present even faster disintegration than its compressed counterparts. Lyophilization can also produce buccal wafers that adhere to mucosa for sustained drug release.

This book is intended for students who are preparing for careers in health fields such as nursing, physical therapy, podiatry, medical technology, agricultural science, public health, and nutrition. The chemistry courses taken by these students typically include material covered in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and biochemistry, compressed into a 1-year period. Because of this broad requirement, many students feel overwhelmed. To help them understand and assimilate so much diverse material, we offer the outline of these topics presented in the text that follows.

However, these guidelines do not address the impact of drilling techniques on the collection of a representative VOC sample. Therefore, site/program QAPPs and SAPs should address the impact of all collection techniques on sample integrity and select those appropriate for the project data quality objectives (DQOs).

Automatic sampler (optional)—The sampler must incorporate glass sample containers for the collection of a minimum of 250 mL of sample. Sample containers must be kept refrigerated at 4°C and protected from light during compositing. If the sampler uses a peristaltic pump, a minimum length of compressible silicone rubber tubing may be used. Before use, however, the compressible tubing should be thoroughly rinsed with methanol, followed by repeated rinsings with distilled water to minimize the potential for contamination of the sample.

Inflammation can also be found in the intervertebral disks resulting in discitis and spondylitis, which can be seen as narrowing of the intervertebral space and destruction of the adjacent cover plates. Seldom synovitis and osteitis can be found in the atlantoaxial area leading to erosions and destruction of the lateral atlantoaxial joint. At the worst the joint is destabilized, this may cause cord compression and neurological loss of function.

Therapy of Selected Diseases crease in arteriolar resistance, ensuring adequate myocardial perfusion. During exercise, further dilation of arterioles is impossible. As a result, there is ischemia associated with pain. Pharmacological agents that act to dilate arterioles would thus be inappropriate because at rest they may divert blood from underperfused into healthy vascular regions on account of redundant arteriolar dilation. The resulting “steal effect” could provoke an anginal attack. (3) The intramyocardial pressure, i.e., systolic squeeze, compresses the capillary bed.
