Computing FIRST sets

The process of preparing programs for a digital computer is especially attractive, not only because it can be economically and scientifically rewarding, but also because it can be an aesthetic experience much like composing poetry or music. This book is the first volume of a multi-volume set of books that has been designed to train the reader in various skills that go into a programmer's craft. The following chapters are not meant to serve as an introduction to computer programming; the reader is supposed to have had some previous experience.

In wastewater treatment, scientific and practical models utilizing numerical computational techniques such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) can significantly help to improve the process as a whole through adsorption systems. In the modeling of the adsorption efficiency for heavy metals from wastewater, some kinetic models have been used such as pseudo first-order and second-order. The present work develops an ANN model to forecast the adsorption efficiency of heavy metals such as zinc, nickel, and copper by extracting experimental data from three case studies.

Picture fuzzy set (2013) is a generalization of the Zadeh’ fuzzy set (1965) and the Antanassov’ intuitionistic fuzzy set. The new concept could be useful for many computational intelligent problems. Basic operators of the picture fuzzy logic were studied by Cuong, Ngan [10, 11]. New concept –Pythagorean picture fuzzy set (PPFS) is a combination of Picture fuzzy set with the Yager’s Pythagorean fuzzy set [12, 13, 14]. First, in the Part 1 of this paper, we consider basic notions on PPFS as set operators of PPFS’s, Pythagorean picture relation, Pythagorean picture fuzzy soft set.

This paper examines the cost efficiency of seventeen Jordanian banks during the period of financial deregulation, 1996-2007. This paper follows a two-stage approach. In the first stage, cost efficiency scores are computed using an input-oriented data envelopment analysis (DEA). At the second stage, cost efficiency scores are regressed on a set of potential explanatory variables in a logit model. While the cost efficiency scores show a declining trend during the early and middle phase of deregulation, they show large improvements in the final phase of financial deregulation.

A computational algorithm is developed for estimating accurately the attitude of a robotic arm which moves along a predetermined path. This algorithm requires preliminary input data obtained in the static mode to yield phase observables for the precise, 3-axis attitude determination of a swinging manipulator in the dynamic mode. Measurements are recorded simultaneously by three GPS L1 receivers and then processed in several steps to accomplish this task.

Cloud computing is a pattern for delivering ubiquitous and on demand computing resources based on pay-as-you-use financial model. Typically, cloud providers advertise cloud service descriptions in various formats on the Internet. On the other hand, cloud consumers use available search engines (Google and Yahoo) to explore cloud service descriptions and find the adequate service. Unfortunately, general purpose search engines are not designed to provide a small and complete set of results, which makes the process a big challenge.

Because the average students are the prevailing part of the student population, it is important but difficult for the educators to help average students by improving their learning efficiency and learning outcome in school tests. We conducted a quasi-experiment with two English classes taught by one teacher in the second term of the first year of a junior high school. The experimental class was composed of average students (N=37), while the control class comprised talented students (N=34). Therefore the two classes performed differently in English subject with mean difference of 13.

In this paper we study the online version of maximum-weighted hereditary subgraph problems. In our online model, the final instance (a graph with n vertices) is revealed in t clusters, 2 ≤ t ≤ n . We first focus on an online version of the maximum - weighted hereditary subgraph problem. Then, we deal with the particular case of the independent set problem. We are interested in two types of results: The competitive ratio guaranteed by the online algorithm and hardness results that account for the difficulty of the problems and for the quality of algorithms developed to solve them.
