This paper presents a theoretical study that describes the fiber bridging mechanism under tensile stress using a closed-form analytical function. This proposed analytical model allows estimating the stress at a crack opening where the fiber orientation is represented by a Gaussian-like periodic distribution function.

Ebook "Geomechanics and fluidodynamics: With applications to reservoir engineering" consists of two lecture courses given by the author to graduate and postgraduate students of the Gubkin Oil and Gas Academy in Moscow. The first course consists of lectures on underground hydrodynamics which I now give and which were initiated long ago by my teacher, Professor Isaak A. Charny. The second course reflects recent studies conducted by the laboratory on Applied Geomechanics in the United Institute of Earth Physics.

This specification covers grades of average wall thickness, or, if specified on the order, minimum wall thickness, of stainless steel tubing for services requiring general corrosion resistance, with particular emphasis on resistance to stress corrosion cracking. These steels are susceptible to embrittlement if used for prolonged periods at elevated temperatures.

The mode I and mode II fracture behavior of a single-layer graphene sheet (SLGS) containing a center crack was characterized with the results of an finite element method (FEM) and an analytical model. Finite element method based micromechanical analysis is used to understand the fracture behavior of functionally SLGS.

An improved six-node triangular finite element based on a twice-interpolation strategy (TIS) for accurately modeling singular stress fields near crack tips of two-dimensional (2D) cracks in solids is presented. In contrast to the traditional approaches, the approximation functions constructed based on the TIS involve both nodal values and averaged nodal gradients.

A phantom node method is developed for problems discretized by 4-node quadrilateral elements to describe arbitrary cracks. By overlapping elements at the position of the crack, the method may treat cracks independently of the mesh.

Residual stress in the welds that attach Control Rod Drive Mechanism nozzles into the upper head of a PWR reactor vessel can influence the vessel’s structural integrity and initiate Primary Water Stress Corrosion Cracking. PWSCC at Alloy 600 CRDM nozzles has caused primary coolant leakage in operating PWRs. We have used Deep Hole Drilling to characterise residual stresses in a PWR vessel head.

This depends on a material’s microstructure and its stress–strain response. By introducing a spatiallyvarying distribution of prior strain-hardening into a material, we can modify the stress field which develops around a crack as it is loaded, producing an increased resistance to ductile tearing.

The model showed matching results for all duplex oxide combinations in varying stress, but the inner logarithmical oxide gave higher crack growth rates than the power law. The power law with the thicker inner oxide showed good results for the change of stress intensity factor and gave the best results when the yield stress was varied. Grain misorientation effect was higher for the duplex oxides with thicker outer oxides.

The numerical wedge splitting tests show that in the case of brittle materials, the lower post-failure stress limit defined in the concrete damaged plasticity model resulted in energy consumption for crack propagation exceeding the defined fracture energy (114% higher in the case of a brittleness number of 4.4).

The stress jumps in reinforcement textile after each crack was also observed and analyzed. In comparison with the experiment, a good agreement between both results was found for all cases of this study. A parametric study could show the effect of the length and position of the measurement zone on the stress-strain curve of TRC’s mechanical behavior.

This paper reports the application of consecutive-interpolation procedure into four-node quadrilateral elements for analysis of two-dimensional cracked solids made of functionally graded composite plate. Compared to standard finite element method, the recent developed consecutiveinterpolation has been shown to possess many desirable features, such as higher accuracy and smooth nodal gradients it still satisfies the Kronecker-delta property and keeps the total number of degrees of freedom unchanged.

In this paper, the tensile properties of the monocrystalline gold film are studied by using molecular dynamics simulation. The stress-strain relation, crack growth behavior and effects of different temperature are considered. The results show that the stress concentration is obviously distributed in the middle and corners of the specimen, leading to the cracks are formed and propagated in these positions. Under the tensile process, the transformation from the face-centered cubic (FCC) into hexagonal closest packed (HCP) structures occurred.

This study presents a numerical investigation of fluid-structure interaction about sodium leakage accident at prototype fast breeder reactor Monju. The dynamic forces of sodium liquid flow acting on the thermowell are the main cause of fatigue failure, which leads to the occurrence of thermowell cracking due to intense stresses and high fatigue-cycle.
