Cytology and HPV genotype screening play an important role in cervical cancer detection. Whether multiple HPV genotyping can predict cytological lesions remains to be further studied. Two thousand two hundred twenty-four females were analyzed for cytology and HPV genotypes test.

The incidence of anal cancer, a Human Papillomavirus (HPV)-related neoplasia, has been increasing in recent decades, mainly in men who have sex with men (MSM). Cytological changes of the anal epithelium induced by HPV can be detected through an anal pap smear.

Though obesity is associated with some malignancies, its association with cervical cancer is still inconclusive. This study was aimed at determining if there was an association between obesity and cervical epithelial cell abnormalities (CEA).

Women living with HIV (WLWH) are at increased risk of persistent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer compared with women from the general population (WGP). We assessed the prevalence and distribution of cervical high-risk (hr) HPV infection and cytological abnormalities in WLWH compared with WGP in Denmark. Predictors of HPV and cytological abnormalities were estimated in WLWH.

UroVysion fluorescence in situ hybridization (uFISH) was reported to have superior sensitivity to urine cytology. However uFISH studies are limited by varying definitions of what is considered a positive result, absence of histopathology and small sample size.

There is limited data in Ghana on the epidemiology of HPV and cervical neoplasia and their associations with HIV. This study aimed to compare among HIV-1 seropositive and HIV-seronegative Ghanaian women: (1) the prevalence, genotype distribution and risk factors associated with cervical HPV infection; and (2) the prevalence and risk factors associated with abnormal cervical cytology.

Human papillomavirus is recognized as a major cause of cervical cancer. It is estimated that annually, 7,095 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and 4,732 die from the disease in Ethiopia.

As one of the main crops in the world, sterility of rice (Oryza sativa L.) significantly affects the production and leads to yield decrease. Our previous research showed that OsPUB73, which encodes U-box domain-containing protein 73, may be associated with male sterility.

The genotoxic effects of 2 heavy metals (mercury chloride and cadmium chloride) on the gametic cells of 6 inbred lines of maize were tested in terms of cytological abnormalities. Meiosis was normal under control conditions. During the treatments with mercury and cadmium there was a concentration-dependent increase in meiotic abnormalities in all the inbred lines.

Tissue culture regenerated materials of Musa L. spp. (banana and plantain) along with their somaclonal variants were assessed for karyotype abnormalities to be used as indicators for rapid cytological marking. The results show that although slight variations were noted in karyomorphometric characters, like chromosome number, arm length, total chromosome length, and total chromosome volume, these were not significant (P ≤ 0.05).

Drought and salinity induce biochemical, physiological, morphological, and genetic responses in plants. To understand the damage to different wheat species caused by these stresses, we investigated root-shoot growth, cell division, chromosomal aberrations and nucleolus organizer regions (AgNORs) in root tip cells.

The speculum should be carefully positioned so the entire cervix is seen. If excess mucus or other secretions obscure the cervix, they should be gently removed using a proctoswab without disturbing the epithelium. Small amounts of blood will not interfere with cytologic evaluation, but large amounts, as occurs during menses, preclude cytologic interpretation by conventional Pap smear. This is considerably less of a problem when liquid based cytology is used.

The emphasis of this guideline is on nongynecological cytology specimen procurement, analysis, reporting and management. Specific microscopic criteria for interpretation are not included since these are well described in textbooks, symposia and workshops. A detailed analysis of related clinical topics such as patient care algorithms for follow up of abnormal nongynecological cytology results are also beyond the scope of this document.

A cervical cytological sample is considered satisfactory for cytological diagnosis when their composition reflects the mucosal lining of the cervix, encompassing ectocervical, squamous metaplastic cells and endocervical columnar cells in fair numbers. It is generally agreed that majority of epithelial abnormalities that eventually lead to an invasive cancer originate in the squamo-columnar junction (transformation zone). As stated by the British Society for Clinical Cytology (BSCC), a cervical smear if properly taken should contain cells from the whole transformation zone(TZ).

Various needles were used to collect tissue for cytological or histological diagnosis. Franzen et al. developed a fine needle and guide for prostatic aspiration by the transrectal route (figure 8). The Franzen needle and guide were designed to allow accurate needle placement into the abnormal area palpated by the fingertip. It was secured by the metal ring fixed to the fingertip and a plate in the palm of the hand. A rubber fingerstall was pulled over it and a 23- or 25-gauge needle was used. Up to six passes could be made in one session (Berner and Orell, 2010).
