Dairy effluent

In present study, a tracer experiment was conducted in two laboratory scale reactors that were operated for treatment of dairy effluent and inferences were drawn for the hydrodynamic characteristics such as residence time distribution curve, mean residence time, dispersion index, volumetric efficiency, short-circuiting, and clogging inside the reactor.

The waste water discharge form industries are major source of pollution and affect the ecosystem (Anikwe and Nwobodo, 2006). The degradation of environment results by the adverse effect of industrial waste on living organism and agriculture (Danalewich et al., 1998). Keeping all these points into consideration the study has been done to study physico – chemical properties of wastewater generated from dairy industry.

The dairy industry effluent without any treatment plays significant risk for public health and environmental pollution mostly in developing countries because all milk is processed industrially.

Whey permeate is a lactose-rich effluent remaining after protein extraction from milk-resulting cheese whey, an abundant dairy waste. The lactose to ethanol fermentation can complete whey valorization chain by decreasing dairy waste polluting potential, due to its nutritional load, and producing a biofuel from renewable source at the same time.

Vegetable oil and grease polluted wastewater caused many problems in wastewater plan such as physical blockages in sewer, pump, screens and filter distributor arms. Its occurrence in effluent increase COD significantly even its amount is not high. In this paper, bioremediation was investigated to remove vegetable oil and grease. Four strains were positive with lipid degrading test. Cell morphology and optimal conditions such as pH, temperature anf lipid concentration was found.
