  • Ebook "Forest landscape ecology: Transferring knowledge to practice" have provided many important testing grounds for the devel- ment and application of landscape ecological principles and methods in North America. This central role of forests in landscape ecology emerged for several reasons. Forest cover is prominent in many regions of North America, from the temperate deciduous forests of the east to the coniferous forests of the north and west.

  • Ebook "Western North American juniperus communities: A dynamic vegetation type" woodlands occupy approximately 55 million hectares, an area larger than the state of Texas. Various species of Juniperus have been increasing in density and are expanding into associated grasslands, reducing the size of the grasslands. The reason for the Juniperus expansion is highly debated, but has important implications for global change and fire regime studies.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the influence of tree thinning on habitat variables and small rodents in a natural deciduous forest in South Korea. We focused on the populations of the small forest-dwelling rodents, striped field mouse Apodemus agrarius and Korean field mouse A. peninsulae. Populations were monitored for 2 years in a natural deciduous forest subject to tree thinning. The coverage of ground vegetation and number and volume of downed trees were significantly increased after thinning.

  • This study aimed to characterize the composition of soil mite populations (Acari: Mesostigmata) from 3 moss habitats (rock moss, bark moss, and soil moss). In total, 15 natural forest ecosystems were analyzed (3 deciduous forests, 5 beech forests, 1 fir forest, 5 spruce forests, and 1 mixed forest), from 8 counties in Romania. A total of 240 soil samples, 97 species, and 3018 individuals were analyzed. The samples were taken from April 2012 until October 2013.

  • In case of gum extraction, it is generally observed that excessive injury caused due to unscientific methods of tapping and overexploitation lead to death of trees this is very serious issue. In this experiment we are developing sustainable gum tapping techniques without giving any harm to tree.

  • Land cover mapping by optical remote sensing has many obstacles including clouds. Clouds block solar radiation coming to earth surface and reflective radiance from the earth surface to remote optical sensors resulting. Therefore, clouds result no-signal areas in images that cannot be used for study of ground objects.

  • Thematic maps present information relating to spatial variations in the distribution of specific geographical features at a regional scale or across the entire basin. The spatial distribution of thematic maps aids in decision-making of management of resources. Different thematic maps generated for the Kinnerasani basin include watershed boundary, drainage network, slope map, landuse/landcover map and soil map with the help of Survey of India topographical map and Cartosat DEM. LULC map was developed using IRS P6 LISS III satellite data.

  • The Vertical distribution of Collembola in different soil layers namely, organic layer (O), 0-5 cm soil depth and 5-10 cm soil depth were studied. The majority of Collembola were recorded from the ‘O’ layer and upper layer in all the season except some exception in hot summer. During summer season, vertical migration of Collembola were seen whereas, such trend is very least seen during winter season where sufficient soil humidity was maintained. Same pattern was seen at species level also expected certain thermopilic species.

  • The objective of this study is to measure the floristic diversity in coffee agroforests and adjoining forests as well to know the effect of different landholding sizes of coffee farms in Kodagu district, Western Ghats of Karnataka. We collected the data on trees, shrubs and herbs from 50 sample plots of 0.16 ha. Each and analyzed for various diversity parameters. Results revealed that Shannon’s (H') was highest in adjoining forests (2.48) compared to that of coffee agroforests (1.92). On the other hand, Simpson’s (D) value recorded in adjoining forests lower (0.

  • The production of fine roots (diameter ≤2 mm) contributes considerably to carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. Fine roots constitute a significant organic matter pool with high net primary productivity and turnover. In this study, fine root decomposition, mortality, and production were estimated at a Quercus serrata Murr. plantation in Japan by using rates of diameter-dependent root mortality, decomposition, and the thickening method employed. Sequential soil core and litter bag techniques were used to collect field data. The experiments were set up in a 20×20 m plot.
