Designing ESP materials

Designing an ESP course-book for technical students to meet their demand for applying effectively in workplace is crucial and practical. This study explored the needs of electronic students at Hue Industrial College (HIC) towards a suggested syllabus. Also, the research aimed to gain some insights into material sources, language structures and functions needed in ESP course.

With a view to improving the quality of ESP materials, this paper analyzes some weaknesses of the book “English for Physics” which was used at the Faculty of English, Hanoi National University between 2004 and 2010. On the basis of this analysis, the question of what should be taken into account when designing ESP materials will be discussed and suggestions will be made.

The experimental materials consisted of 49 rice genotypes. The experiment was conducted under saline-alkali soil (pH = 8.9; EC = 2.21dSm-1 ; ESP = 45%) in randomized complete block design with three replications. In each block 49 entries were accommodated. The spacing between rows to row and plant to plant were 20 cm and 15 cm, respectively. Length of row was 5m and 3 rows of each entry were planted in a plot. The nursery was planted after the period of 30 days. The yield and yield contributing traits were utilized for estimation of correlation coefficients.

The findings implied significant factors to consider in the ESP curriculum design for students of BA: (i) speaking and listening should be prioritized; (ii) workplace-oriented skills such as telephoning, writing emails, reading business texts and interviewing should be included; (iii) content-based and skill-integrated materials should be used or developed and (iv) interactive and project-based activities were suggested.
