This paper presents an analysis of scienti¯c collaboration through graph theory, based on a previous study focused on the collaborative work of researchers within an institution. This proposal also exposes the representation of inter-institutional collaboration of research groups, combining graph theory and data mining.

Over the past years, a number of international initiatives that recognize the importance of sharing and reusing digital educational resources among educational communities through the use of Learning Object Repositories (LORs) have emerged. Typically, these initiatives focus on collecting digital educational resources that are offered by their creators for open access and potential reuse. Nevertheless, most of the existing LORs are designed more as digital repositories, rather than as Knowledge Management Systems (KMS).

In this paper, we investigated the genres of learning objects (LOs) within eight e-learning courses that provide boating safety instruction in the United States. Guided by findings from our literature review, five genres of LOs emerged during the analysis, including interactive and non-interactive graphics, interactive and non-interactive animations, and interactive text feedback. We surveyed the use of each genre of LOs within the courses and found that more non-interactive LOs than interactive LOs were adopted.

Learning has transcended into a life-long endeavor in the information age. It is no longer restricted to confines of formal classrooms. Consequently, a student is not restricted to traditional learning resources like teachers, textbooks or printed content. Digital resources available on the Internet form a very significant component of self-learning. Copious volumes of learning resources without legal barriers to self-learning reside in digital repositories, educational institution portals and on numerous websites.

Learning Object Repositories (LORs) are a core element of the Opening up Education movement around the word. Despite, the wide efforts and investments in this topic, still most of the existing LORs are designed mainly as digital libraries that facilitate discovery and provide open access to educational resources in the form of Learning Objects (LOs). In that way, LORs include limited functionalities of Knowledge Management Systems (KMSs) for organizing and sharing educational communities’ explicit and tacit knowledge around the use of these educational resources.

Between January 2006 and February 2008, AMS Compliance provided its results from five investigations of certified organic operations to NOP. Although they recommended that NOP officials take enforcement actions against these operations, we found that NOP did not respond to these in a timely or effective manner. In addition, in those cases where enforcement actions were issued, NOP did not monitor the organic operations to ensure compliance with those actions.

NOP is responsible for enforcing standards of production, handling, and labeling for farming and handling operations that are certified to market their products under USDA’s organic label. Audit Report 01601-03-Hy 8 17 Some actions, up to and including the revocation of an operation’s certified organic status, may be taken by the accredited certifying agent without direct involvement by NOP. However, through its enforcement actions, NOP plays a central role in maintaining the validity of the program and ensuring public trust in USDA’s certified organic labels.

In FY2008, LO continued to review and revise policies, procedures, services, and organizational lines to address shifting workloads, to use electronic information to enhance basic operations and services, and to work with other NLM program areas to ensure permanent access to electronic information through the development of an NLM Digital Repository. An LO-wide group which includes members from OCCS and NCBI was created to identify, test, and recommend software for the repository.

In this section, the scope and character of holdings in the HathiTrust Digital Library and ReCAP print repository are examined with a view to their potential value in a shared service environment. We first consider the range of holdings in the HathiTrust Digital Library, on the premise that the vast and still expanding scope of the mass-digitized corpus will be a key driver in the transformation of academic library collections and services.

A key goal of this research project was to assess the scope of coverage in shared print and shared digital repositories, with a view to understanding how the combined resources might enable a local reduction in redundant print inventory. For this reason, it was important to understand how much of the print storage collection in ReCAP is duplicated—or is likely to be duplicated—in the HathiTrust Digital Library. As of this writing, the shared ReCAP facility holds more than 8 million items contributed by the three partner libraries.

At the same time, the emergence of the HathiTrust, a shared digital repository consolidating much of the library-contributed content from the Google Books database, appeared to resolve many of the concerns the library community had regarding long-term stewardship of the mass-digitized book corpus.

In the absence of a licensing option, online access to most of the digitized retrospective literature will be severely constrained. Demand for print versions of digitized books will continue to exist and libraries will be motivated to meet it, but they will need to do so in more cost-effective ways. In the absence of fully available online editions, full-text indexing of digitized in-copyright material provides a means of moderating and tuning demand for print versions and should facilitate the transfer of an increasing part of the print inventory to high-density warehouses.

Analysis of the distribution of subject matter and library holdings represented in the HathiTrust Digital Library and shared print repositories further confirmed that the digital corpus is largely representative of the collective academic library collection, suggesting a broad potential market for service.
