Discharge from the ear

Theileriosis is a tick borne haemoprotozoan disease caused by Theileria spp, Theileria annulata and Theileria orientalis most commonly. The disease has gained economic importance as it causes huge losses to farmers in the form of decrease milk production and expensive treatment of the disease.

Otitis media is an inflammation of the middle ear and mastoid cavity, with recurrent ear discharge through a perforated tympanic membrane. Pseudomonas aeruginosa has been particularly blamed for deep seated and progressive destruction of middle ear structures through its toxins and enzymes. The present study was done to determine the prevalence and antibiotic susceptibility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa isolated from otitis media. Patients fulfilling clinical criteria were considered into the study. Two ear swabs were taken from each patient.

Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is chronic inflammation of middle ear and mastoid cavity with recurrent ear discharge lasting for more than 6months. Studies are mainly done on the bacterial aetiology of CSOM, but very little is known about the fungal aspects of such cases. Otomycosis is increasing in the recent years because of the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, corticosteroids, and an increase in the number of immune deficiency disorders.

Sporotrichosis is chronic fungal infection and regarded as occupational disease affecting florist, farmer, gardener etc. Lymphocutaneous form of the disease is common. But here we present a case of mucocutaneous sporotrichosis of ear of a housewife. It is a very rare condition.

Otomycosis is an acute, subacute or chronic fungal infection of the external auditory canal. It is worldwide in distribution with a higher prevalence in the hot, humid, and dusty areas of the tropics and subtropics. A wide variety of fungi can cause Otomycosis. In this study, our aim was to determine the most common mode of presentation, predisposing factors, and the spectrum of fungi involved in Otomycosis. 60 Ear discharge samples were collected aseptically using two sterile cotton swabs. One swab was used for direct microscopic examination and used for fungal culture.
