  • Ebook "Classical and spatial stochastic processes: With applications to biology (Second edition)" presents the concepts and applications of random processes with the same illuminating simplicity as its first edition, but with the notable addition of substantial modern material on biological modeling. While still treating many important problems in fields such as engineering and mathematical physics, the book also focuses on the highly relevant topics of cancerous mutations, influenza evolution, drug resistance, and immune response.

  • Misclassification has been shown to have a high prevalence in binary responses in both livestock and human populations. Leaving these errors uncorrected before analyses will have a negative impact on the overall goal of genome-wide association studies (GWAS) including reducing predictive power.

  • This paper further extends the CS-FEMDSG3 for static, free vibration, and dynamic response of the stiffened plate resting on viscoelastic foundation subjected to a moving vehicle. The viscoelastic foundation is modeled by discrete springs and dampers whereas the stiffened plate can be considered as the combination between the Mindlin plate and the Timoshenko beam elements.

  • In general, the fluctuation of the elastic modulus of materials is crucial in structural analysis. This paper develops a stochastic finite element method (SFEM) for analyzing a nonuniform column considering the random process in elastic modulus. This random process of elastic modulus is assumed as a one-dimensional Gaussian random field. The weighted integration method is used to discretize the random field and establish the stochastic finite element formulation to compute the first and second moments of displacement fields.

  • In this paper, an efficient computational approach is developed to investigate the free-vibration behavior of functionally graded plates. The problem is developed based on a three-dimensional elasticity theory, which is expected to capture the structural response accurately. Isogeometric analysis is employed as a discretion tool to solve the problems.

  • Recently, conventional logistic maps have been used in different vital applications like modeling and security. However, unfortunately the conventional logistic maps can tolerate only one changeable parameter. In this paper, three different generalized logistic maps are introduced with arbitrary powers which can be reduced to the conventional logistic map. The added parameter (arbitrary power) increases the degree of freedom of each map and gives us a versatile response that can fit many applications.

  • The paper investigates the dynamic response of laminated composite plate under the effect of blast loading. The cell-based smoothed discrete shear gap method (CSFEM-DSG3) based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) and the equivalent layer theory (ELT) is used to model the behavior of the laminated composite plate.

  • We further study isogeometric approach for response analysis of laminated composite plates using the higher-order shear deformation theory. The present theory is derived from the classical plate theory (CPT) and the shear stress free surface conditions are naturally satisfied. Therefore, shear correction factors are not required. Galerkin weak form of response analysis model for laminated composite plates is used to obtain the discrete system of equations.

  • The Skills framework for 3 to 19-year-olds in Wales (Welsh Assembly Government, 2008) makes it clear that teachers need to respond to learners where they currently are in their learning, not where they think they ought to be according, for example, to their age. Effective assessment procedures (formative, diagnostic and summative) will provide teachers with the necessary evidence for them to tailor the specific teaching of writing skills to meet individual needs within the class.

  • The preceding paragraph is not an indictment of application-oriented curricula per se, only of the particular way [N1] wants such a curriculum implemented: it allows the utilitarian impulse to overwhelm the basic ed- ucational mission, with the result that basic ideas and skills not directly related to the so-called real world problems often get left out. By yielding to the temptation of “doing just enough to get the problems solved”, the curriculum of [N1] ends up presenting a fragmented and amorphous version of mathematics.

  • Moreover, earnings management proxies should be particularly responsive to the use of discretion and firms’ reporting incentives, making our tests more powerful. Finally, we can draw on prior research in constructing several measures of earnings management (e.g., Healy and Wahlen, 1999; Dechow and Skinner, 2000). Following Leuz et al. (2003), we compute four different proxies capturing a wide range of earnings management activities: i.e.

  • Dualism is a dominant theory of life that considers reality to be a balance between two independent and fundamental principles: good and evil, mind and matter, nature and nurture. In the same manner we see the thread of dualism run through the ecology of parasitism: they can generate diversity but cause extinction, they may castrate a host but increase its growth rate, and they can stimulate an immune response but at the same time encourage a secondary chronic infection.

  • More sophisticated econometric procedures have been used to estimate the market’s reaction to Federal Reserve policy, focusing on the unanticipated element of the actions. Using a Vector Autoregression (VAR) tomodelmonetary policy, for example, Edelberg and Marshall (1996) found a large, highly significant response of bill rates to policy shocks, but only a small, marginally significant response of bond rates. Other examples of the VAR approach include Evans and Marshall (1998) and Mehra (1996).
