Femoral varus deformities complicating the realignment of the quadriceps muscles are frequently associated with medial patellar luxation (MPL) in dogs. Therefore, distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) is recommended in dogs affected with severe MPL and a distal femoral varus deformity.

The purpose of this study was to perform a derotational osteotomy at the distal femur, as is done in cases of patellofemoral instability, and demonstrate the predictability of three-dimensional (3D) changes on axes in a cadaveric model by the use of a new mathematical approach.

Defining the optimal cutting plane for derotational osteotomy at the distal femur for correction of torsion in cases of patellofemoral instability is still challenging. This preliminary study investigates changes of frontal alignment by a simplified trigonometrical model and demonstrates a surgical guidance technique with the use of femur cadavers.

We report a case of hardware failure after distal femoral osteotomy (DFO) with a broken screw pulled out from the locking hole and positioned within the knee joint. Case presentation: A 57-year-old man presented to our orthopedic outpatient department with 3-months history of an unusual painful swelling at the operated area following DFO. The leakage of joint fluid from the penetrated suprapatellar pouch was assumed to be the reason for this complication.

Varus deformities of the knee are frequently corrected by osteotomies, which should be performed at the level of origin. But in contrast to high tibial osteotomies (HTO), little data exists for distal femoral osteotomies (DFO). This study evaluates radiological and clinical outcomes after valgisation osteotomies in the proximal tibia and distal femur.

Increased femoral anteversion (FA) has been recently demonstrated as one risk factor for recurrent patellar dislocation (RPD). However, it has been still unclear whether the increase of FA can result in patellar dislocation, and subsequent morphological and trabecular microarchitectural changes in the trochlea has not been investigated. Forty knees from 20 rabbits at 3 months of age were included. The right knees underwent surgery with internal rotation of distal femur to increase FA, with the left knees acting as internal controls.
