Upper respiratory tract infections (URTIs) are common in children. The cause of URTIs is usually viral, but parents’ attitudes often contribute to inappropriate prescription of antibiotics, promoting antibiotic resistance.

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health issues of the twenty-first century affecting even low- and middle-income countries. Overweight and obese children are more likely to stay obese into adulthood.

Most government training programmes have attempted to improve the level of knowledge and skills of the TBA but have done little to bridge the wide socio-cultural gap between the traditional and the modern practitioners. On the other hand, several micro-level projects especially in the NGO sector have shown that when this gulf between the TBA and the formal health system is bridged, TBA training programmes can be much more effective.

There are a number of compelling reasons for all physicians to possess knowledge and skill in the behavioral and social sciences. Perhaps most important is that roughly half of the causes of mortality in the United States are linked to social and behavioral factors. In addition, our nation’s population is aging and becoming more culturally diverse. Both of these trends highlight the need for enhanced physician capabilities in the behavioral and social sciences.

According to the eminent medical educator, Dr. Marshall Wolf, the fundamental skill required to master the Art of Medicine is the ability to accurately make critical—often life-sustaining—decisions in the face of incomplete data. Every trainee and practicing physician will encounter common medical conditions with a high degree of regularity, and needs an approach to clinical decisionmaking that is reflexive and yet retains the nuanced recognition of the subtleties affecting the individual patient.

In health care practice outside the hospital, about 80% of the diseases treated are chronic. Although much of the treatment is remarkably efficient as a result of, inter alia, medical research, its quality is often far from satisfactory. Many patients do not comply* with instructions; fewer than 50% follow their treatment correctly. It has been observed that patients are inadequately informed about their condition and that few have been helped to manage or take responsibility for their treat- ment.

A big part of my role as a physician is educating my patients about their health. I take as much time as each person needs to explain prevention measures, test results, and treatment options. I encourage questions. But in the moment, sitting there in my office, most people do not yet know what to ask me. By the time questions flood their thoughts, they may be back at work or at home.

This, too, was the period when the integrity of Eclectic Medicines was threatened by the “resinoid” distraction, with which dishonest manufacturers came near disrupting Eclecticism. Finally, there arose a fierce war against Professor L. E. Jones (conducted most largely upon paper) which displayed to full advantage the ridiculous frailties of all concerned. Another disturber was to come.

The decision-making process is at the core of ethics and medicine. Family physicians in residency training spend three years learning to make decisions with, for and about patients and their health care. Most of these daily decisions have potential ethical implications. Competent family physicians must be able to recognize the ethical considerations in the care of patients in both in- and out-patient settings.

Although women account for more physician office visits than men, most women receive diagnoses and treatments based on what has worked for men. Until recently, medical research has largely ignored many health issues important to women, and women have long been under-represented in clinical trials. Many health education programs have realized this inequity and have begun to incorporate women’s health programs into their curriculum.

Team care is essential for effective diabetes prevention and management. Team structure is best determined by the practice setting. Teams should be led by the most appropriate health care professional, and may include primary care physicians, diabetes educators, endocrinologists, dietitians, nurses, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, physician assis- tants, psychologists, dental professionals, exercise professionals, social workers, specialists for care of the eye, foot, heart, and kidney, and others as necessary. Many of these team members also may be certified diabetes educators.

Medical practitioners and health care educators must be continually vigilant of the growing and ever-changing health issues related to girls and women who lead an active lifestyle and participate in sports and exercise. There have been landmark legislations that have changed the social perception that girls and women not only can, but should be physically active. With any changing social milieu, there are evolving health issues associated with the journey.

Plunkett et al. (2002) performed another study in Chicago, and included African-Americans, Hispanics, and individuals with varied levels of education. Less than one-half of the women (42%) considered OB/GYN gender as important. When seeing an obstetrician, bedside manner, office location, referral by another physician, and recommendations from friends and family were the four factors considered most important at 57%, 45%, 40% and 35%, respectively.
