Efficiency and its variation

  • For most domestic animal species, including bovines, it is difficult to identify causative genetic variants involved in economically relevant traits. The candidate gene approach is efficient because it investigates genes that are expected to be associated with the expression of a trait and defines whether the genetic variation present in a population is associated with phenotypic diversity.

  • Siberian stone pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour) is a cone-bearing species with outstanding nutritious seeds, health-supporting properties, and nut oil. Currently, the main volume of pine nuts is harvested in natural forests, which causes damage to ecosystems. The best solution to this problem would be harvesting nuts on special pine nut plantations established on the basis of high-seeding clones. However, it is hampered by the low efficiency of the existing methods for assessing plus-tree productivity.

  • The gBLUP method was used due to its computational efficiency and it showed similar predictive performance to other approaches, especially for traits whose variation is of polygenic nature, such as body traits analysed in this study. The accuracy or predictive ability of the gBLUP model was estimated for three growth traits: body weight, folk length and condition index.

  • The preferred choice for molecular marker development is identifying existing variation in populations through DNA sequencing. With the genome resources currently available for bitter gourd (Momordica charantia), it is now possible to detect genome-wide insertion-deletion (InDel) polymorphisms among bitter gourd populations, which guides the efficient development of InDel markers.

  • The export of petroleum products is the base avenue and constitutes a major ingredient of the Saudi economy. It is evident that the oil prices gradually decrease year by year governed by some international uncontrollable factors. The study is based on the secondary data obtained from the website of the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority (SAMA).

  • The study revealed highly significant differences for all the yield and its contributing traits, indicating the presence of high genetic variability. The phenotypic and genotypic co-efficient of variation (PCV and GCV) was high for grain yield per plant followed no of productive tiller per plant and moderate for plant height, spike length and thousand grain weight.

  • Since the performances of crops may vary from region to region (Kamble et al., 2004) it is important to study the variation and performance of varieties in a new location to enhance the production efficiency. Hence, the present field study was undertaken to find out the suitable tuberose varieties for Thiruvarur district of Tamil Nadu.

  • The present study was conducted mainly with the objective to study the relationship between personal profile and management orientation of gerbera growers. For the study, Osmanabad, Nanded and Latur district was selected purposively from Marathwada region. As regard with all independent variables viz., age, education, experience in gerbera cultivation, land holding, area under gerbera, annual income, extension contact, mass media exposure, risk orientation, innovativeness and economic motivation had positive and highly significant relationship with their management orientation.

  • Nitrogen use efficiency is considered as one of the most yield limiting factor for the rice production in all the rice growing regions of the world. This experiment was conducted to investigate the variation in nitrogen use efficiency of rice cultivars, the selection of rice cultivars with high nitrogen use efficiency, and the relationships of nitrogen use efficiency with the growth characteristics under non-limiting conditions of factors like water, fertilizer inputs.

  • Hybrid breeding technology is one of the most feasible options to meet the future food challenges and sustainable agriculture. Large number of cross combinations are attempted and evaluated in hybrid breeding programs, but a few are selected. This is labour intensive, time consuming and costly; despite of it selection efficiency is too low. Therefore, it is important to explore alternate approaches to enhance the selection efficiency to predict hybrid performance. Pedigree data of the parental lines and molecular marker have been effectively employed to predict field performance of hybrids.

  • An investigation was carried out at ZARS, VC Farm, Mandya during 2015 to study the variability produced in two F2 populations of rice viz., ‘Rajamudi × BR-2655’ and ‘Rathnachoodi × BR-2655’ with 500 single plants to estimate the variability, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as percentage. The results showed that PCV values in general were higher than GCV for various characters studied. The high PCV and GCV values was obtained for grain yield per plant and low PCV and GCV was observed for thousand grain weight and panicle length.

  • A field study was conducted with an objective to assess diurnal variations in photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence parameters in two stay green wheat genotypes viz. DL 1266- 1 and Arina 166 to gain insight into photoprotective regulation mediated by photosynthetic pigments during grain filling under late sown heat stress condition. Heat stress was imposed by delaying sowing date i.e. 12th January. Diurnal alterations in temperature affected all the parameters associated with photosynthetic pigments and chlorophyll fluorescence.

  • The flowering behavior of wax apple in new alluvial zone of West Bengal with five germplasm was carried out at Horticulture Research Station, Mondouri, Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya in the year 2015-16 with an objective to provide a wealth of usable information to improve wax apple breeding programme. A wide range of variation was noted in respect of different parameters of flowering behavior. Flower bud emerged from 3 rd week of October to last week of April with a period of bud development of 15.25 to 31.75 days among different germplasm of wax apple.

  • Meteorological drought is a natural hazard that can occur under all climatic regimes. Monitoring the drought is a vital and important part of predicting and analyzing drought impacts. In the present study, monthly time series of rainfall data (1980–2016) from five stations were used to derive SPI, particularly at 3-month time scales. This 3-month SPI was interpolated to depict temporal patterns of meteorological drought and its severity during 2014 and 2016 years. SPI was more efficient than departure in spatial analysis of drought.

  • Cytoplasmic Male sterility (CMS) is increasingly utilized for hybrid seed production of chilli (Capsicum annuum L.). Eight CMS and eight maintainer lines were studied for genetic diversity using ISSR markers. The ISSR analysis revealed substantial polymorphism in chilli. The results of the present study indicated the efficiency of ISSR markers in investigating genetic variability at molecular level, which is important for detecting variation of different genotypes of chilli and its utilization for further breeding programme.

A sample of 52 banks is selected for the study. Three stages of analysis are adopted. At the first stage, the technical efficiency is analysed between countries to derive variations of between banks from one country to another. It’s found that Kuwaiti and Emirati banks are regionally best performers.

  • Oocyte mitochondria are highly dynamic and exhibit frequent fission and fusion. Those are clustered in the cytoplasm of previtellogenic oocytes which prepare for different synthetic activities for successful reproductive investment. In contrast, mitochondrial abundance is less in the male gametic lineage. The spermatocytes and the nurse cells in the testis have an unusual type of mitochondria, nebenkern which is formed by the fusions of number of mitochondria. A completely different type of mitochondrion is discovered in the flagellum of the spermatozoa.
