EFL learners’ listening comprehension

Listening is considered one of the most challenging language skills, so most of EFL learners find it difficult to get engaged in learning it. Various obstacles have been reported causing challenges for EFL learners in English listening comprehension. This study, therefore, aimed to explore EFL students’ learning engagement and their problems in English listening comprehension.

Listening plays a pivotal role in English language learning as it accounts for the majority of a learner's language comprehension. However, thoroughly recalling every detail mentioned earlier for later understanding requires certain cognitive efforts and specific skills such as note-taking which learners frequently fail to take into consideration.

The control group, in the meantime, was given listening exercises as homework. A pre-test and post-test was used to measure the participants’ improvement in listening comprehension. The results showed that the treatment group significantly outperformed their control group counterparts. This suggests that extensive listening facilitates EFL learners’ listening comprehension.

With the light that literature has shed on the merits of authentic videos, this paper aims to foreground two video input enhancement activities, namely annotating and captioning and argue that when embedded in authentic videos, annotations and captions aid EFL learners’ vocabulary acquisition and thus English listening comprehension.
