Zr-based metal-organic frameworks (Zr-MOFs) are emerging as potential adsorbents for removing nitrogen contaminants in fuel and wastewater. Functionalized Zr-MOFs exhibited superior indole (IND) adsorption capacity than the original MOF, but the activity of the multiple adsorption sites has not been discussed.

The presence of various types of contaminants such as heavy metals, emerging organic contaminants, pesticides, organic waste, organic dyes, radionuclide’s, fluorides, etc. cause water pollution. These pollutants are of concern to engineers, environmentalists and scientists. Due to the lack of freshwater, it is very important to recycle the wastewater after treatment to remove organic contaminates and heavy metal pollutants.

In recent years, alternative methods to conventional synthesis of MOFs (metal-organic frameworks) have emerged due to the problematic use of solvents for both the environment and human health. Here we present the synthesis of ZIFs (zeolitic imidazolate frameworks) at high pressure by means of a hydraulic press provided with a heating mechanism.

Metamaterial (MM) is emerging as a promising approach to manipulate electromagnetic waves, spanning from radio frequency to the optical region. In this paper, we employ an effect called electromagnetically-induced transparency (EIT) in all-dielectric MM structures to create a narrow transparent window in opaque broadband of the optical region (580-670 nm). Using dielectric materials instead of metals can mitigate the large non-radiative ohmic loss on the metal surface.

Nanobiotechnology is an emerging field of science that utilizes nanobased systems for various biotechnological and biomedical applications. The synthesis of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles has attracted considerable attention, as they have high surface area and high fraction of atoms which is responsible for their fascinating properties such as antimicrobial, magnetic, electronic and catalytic activity. The antibacterial activities of TiO2 nanoparticles were studied in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli.

Inducing calcium carbonate precipitation is another important function of urease in nature. The process takes advantage of the supply of carbonate ions derived from urea hydrolysis and of an increase in pH generated by the reaction, effects that in the presence of Ca2+ ions lead to the precipitation of CaCO3.

The report also identifies water-related risks for electric power/energy, apparel, biotechnology/pharmaceutical, forest products and metals/mining firms. For companies in these and other sectors, climate change will further reduce the availability of reliable and high quality water, impacting productivity, costs, revenues, public goodwill and reputation. The report highlights the intensifying conflict between energy use and water availability. With increasing frequency, choosing one of these resources means undermining the other – the other, usually being water.

Both human activities and natural activities can change the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics of water, and will have specific ramifications for human and ecosystem health. Water quality is affected by changes in nutrients, sedimentation, temperature, pH, heavy metals, non-metallic toxins, persistent organics and pesticides, and biological factors, among many other factors (Carr and Neary 2008). Following are brief discussions of these major contaminants.

The five elements refer to five categories in the natural world, namely wood, fire, earth, metal and water. According to the theory wood, fire, earth, metal and water are the basic substances that constitute the material world. These substances are not only of the relations with generation and restriction but set in a state of constant motion and change for example wood promotes fire, fire promotes earth, earth promotes metal, metal promotes water, and water, in turn, promotes wood.
