Neonatal mortality in the study area was 4.1% which was high and immediate action should be taken towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. To improve neonatal survival, high impact interventions such as promotion of maternal service utilization, essential newborn care and early initiation of exclusive breast feeding were recommended.

Ethiopia is one of the ten countries with the highest number of neonatal deaths globally, and only 1 in 10 women deliver with a skilled attendant. Promotion of essential newborn care practices is one strategy for improving newborn health outcomes that can be delivered in communities as well as facilities.

Delayed bathing and early initiation of breastfeeding are among the essential interventions recommended to save newborn lives. Although survey coverage reports are key to monitoring these interventions, few studies investigated whether such reports accurately reflect the proportion of mothers and children who received these interventions.

Intra-partum, post-natal and neonatal cares have the potential to save 20-40% of newborn lives. Care at birth and in the first days of life not only saves the lives of mothers and newborns, but also reduces serious complications that may have long-term effect. The SNL (Saving Newborn Lives) initiative demonstrates remarkable changes in all areas of maternal and newborn care. Training CHWs in Essential Newborn Care (ENC) has increased the proportion of women receiving early ante- and post-natal care. Trained TBAs are important providers of delivery and PNC services in the community.

Controlling communicable diseases in day care and school settings is of utmost importance. Providing a safe, comfortable, and healthy environment facilitates the educational process, encourages social development, and allows children to acquire healthy attitudes toward organized settings. However, children who are ill or feel unwell can create difficulties in group settings. An ill child often demands more attention from the teacher or caregiver and cannot fully participate in group or educational activities.

In developing countries, a mother’s death in childbirth means that her newborn will almost certainly die and that her older children are more likely to suffer from disease. Moreover, when mothers are malnourished, ill, or receive inade- quate care, their newborns face a higher risk of disease and premature death. 9 Almost one-quar- ter of newborns in developing countries are born low birth weight, largely due to their mothers’ poor health and nutritional status, which results in increased vulnerability to infection and a high- er risk of developmental problems.
