Ebook "Energy conservation in the design of multi-storey buildings" contains 13 papers organized into two parts. Part I deals with predictive methods. It includes papers that describe the design of Australian projects where energy was a major issue; examine energy conservative building design from the standpoints of New York and Singapore; present a design tool for estimating energy consumption and costs; and consider limitations in the application of computers to the design of the air conditioning plant. Part II is devoted to energy management.

A probabilistic model is proposed to predict the risk effects on time and cost of public building projects. The research goal is to utilize a real history data in estimating project cost and duration. The model results can be used to adjust floats and budgets of the planning schedule before project commencement. Statistical regression models and sample tests are developed using real data of 113 public projects. The model outputs can be used by project managers in the planning phase to validate the schedule critical path time and project budget.

In air pollution studies at metropolis, as in Bangkok or Saigon, installation of new stations for monitoring dangerous pollution sources is costly. Using statistical models and analyzing data sets collected at good stations to predict air pollution levels at malfunctioning stations, therefore, are highly demanding. We study air pollution prediction by geo-statistical methods with a realistic dataset costly observed in Ho Chi Minh City.

This paper introduces the building method of loosely coupled GPS/INS integrated navigation system. The Euler angles estimation and the velocity constraints are used to improve accuracy. We use MATLAB/Simulink software to simulate and analyze data. The experimental system is built on a low-cost IMU with tri-axis gyroscope, accelerometer and magnetometer and a GPS module to verify the model algorithm. The update rate of the integrated system is equal to the INS rate of 100 Hz and the rate of GPS is 10 Hz.

The effective estimation of costs is crucial to the success of construction projects. Cost estimates are used to evaluate, approve and/or fund projects. Organizations use some form of classification system to identify the various types of estimates that may be prepared during the lifecycle of a project. This research presents a parametric-cost model for pump station projects. Fourteen factors have been identified as important to the influence of the cost of pump station projects.

Resource use was routinely collected as part of the study. Non-inpatient resource use data was collected using a questionnaire distributed between January 1996 and September 1997. The incremental costs reported in the analysis have the study protocol driven costs removed. These were replaced with a pattern of clinic visits reflecting general practitioner and specialist clinical opinion on the implementation of intensive policy. Where a patient was still alive at the end of the follow-up, a simulation model was used to estimate the time from end of follow-up to death.

This is a welcome and natural development. A key principle of this expansion will be to ensure inclusion of all parties, irrespective of direct agency-specific resource allocation. Another key element will be to monitor transaction costs, cognizant of staff time as it relates to practical public health outcomes. External relations with host country government and other stakeholders (e.g. development partners, private sector and civil society) are critically important to the successful implementation of GHI in Kenya.

Navigant reconstructed the historical costs of the WTC program using the chronology of periodic Port Authority presentations by prior Executive Directors and management to the Board of Commissioners, project cost reports current as of October 2011, related documents, and the findings of interviews to provide the Special Committee with the analysis of past spending at the WTC site. Furthermore, Navigant preliminarily and independently analyzed the Port Authority’s estimated cost to complete for its reasonableness. ...

Our methodology is based on a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) calibrated model augmented with endogenous market structures in line with recent developments in the macroeconomic literature (see Etro, 2009, for a survey). This model is perturbed with a realistic structural change to the cost structure, with the purpose to study the short and long term reactions of the economy. Therefore, our methodology is based on a solid theoretical framework and provides results that can be easily replicated by economists. However, it has some limitations that we need to point out.

It is important at this point to determine if assessments about organizational practices will be made internally or by outside experts. The advantages to doing it internally are that direct costs are likely to be lower and the process may become an engaging organizational exercise that builds communications capacity in and of itself. The advantages to using outside experts are their objectivity, time and availability, the knowledge they bring from other organizations for comparison purposes, and the credibility that may accompany their credentials and expertise....
