Ethanol root

Vetiver grass (Vetiveria zizanioides L.) is a perennial grass, native to India and now cultivated in many parts of the tropics. In this study, we examined the antiinflammatory activity of the ethanol extract from Vetiver roots through the albumin protein denaturation model.

Vetiver root has many end uses in ayurveda and textile finishing. It is multifunctional bio resource widely available in Karnataka. The present study is designed to optimize the vetiver root extract for textile finishing. The Gulabi variety vetiver root was powdered by traditional pounding technique and powder of varied concentrations (2, 4, 6 and 8 %) were subjected to aqueous and ethanol extraction. The present investigation is focused on optimization of vetiver root extract for textile application.

Moringa oleifera (Lam.) has remarkable medicinal properties and nutritional value possessed by various parts of the tree Viz. leaves, seeds, pods, roots and bark. The therapeutic effects of M. oleifera are due to the combined actions or effects of various bioactive components or phytochemical constituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, sterols and tannins. The present study was carried out to find the availability of these five important phyto-constituents in aqueous, ethanol, methanol and chloroform extracts.

This study investigates the effect of ethanol root and leaf extracts of Sida acuta on some kidney function indices and electrolytes in albino wistar rats. The rats were divided into 4 groups of 7 rats each. Group 1 was the control group, group II received an oral dose of 100 mg/kg leaf extract of Sida acuta daily, group III received an oral dose of 100 mg/kg root extract of Sida acuta daily while group IV received 50 mg/kg each of leaf extract and root extract of Sida acuta daily.

Healthy seeds of different varieties of rice (PD 6, NDR 359, PD 16 and PS 5) and wheat (UP 262, UP 2628, PBW 175 and UP 2554) were germinated and fourteen days after germination, young rice/wheat seedlings were transferred to half strength of Hogland solution (pH 7.0) containing either recommended levels of Zn (0.05 mg Zn L-1 ) or no Zn for four days. For solidification of medium 0.4% w/v agar- agar was mixed in the Hogland solutions of both –Zn and +Zn. Prior to solidification, 11.25 mL of 0.1% bromothymol blue dye solution prepared in 60 % ethanol and was mixed to agar nutrient solution.

To meet the demands of good quality and true to type planting material of Vanda hybrid „Dr. Anek‟, in vitro micropropagation protocol was developed at Center for Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (CPBMB), College of Horticulture, Kerala Agriculture University. Antibacterial, antifungal and cytotoxic activities of ethanol extract of tuberous roots of Amorphophallus campanulatus were studied. Disc diffusion technique was used to determine in vitro antibacterial and antifungal activities. Cytotoxicity was determined against brine shrimp nauplii.

Aqueous and ethanol extracts of Avicennia marina (Forsk.) Vierh. plant parts, namely leaves, stem and pneumatophore, were tested for their nematicidal activity against root knot nematode Meloidogyne javanica (Treub) Chitwood. Results showed that A. marina exerted more lethal effect in mortality of juveniles compared to hatching of juveniles.

Sonneratia apetala pneumatophore samples were collected from Xuan Thuy National Park, and then 80% methanol extract was fractionated through Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography.
