Ebook "Ecology, systematics, and the natural history of predaceous diving beetles (Coleoptera: Dytiscidae)" will allow a greater appreciation of dytiscids as model organisms for investigations of fundamental principles derived from ecological and evolutionary theory. Contributed chapters are by authors who are actively engaged in studying dytiscids and each chapter offers a synthesis of the current knowledge of a variety of topics and will provide future directions for research.

All species within a community either directly or indirectly interact with each other. Such interactions serve as the nucleus of both ecological and evolutionary processes. This study focused on dominant tree species' interspecific associations and the stability of evergreen broadleaved forest stands in Phu Quoc National Park in Kien Giang province of Vietnam.

How contemporary plant genomes originated and evolved is a fascinating question. One approach uses reference genomes from extant species to reconstruct the sequence and structure of their common ancestors over deep timescales. A second approach focuses on the direct identification of genomic changes at a shorter timescale by sequencing ancient DNA preserved in subfossil remains.

Mouse models have allowed for the direct interrogation of genetic effects on molecular, physiological, and behavioral brain phenotypes. However, it is unknown to what extent neurological or psychiatric traits may be human- or primate-specific and therefore which components can be faithfully recapitulated in mouse models.

The detection of signatures of selection in genomic regions provides insights into the evolutionary process, enabling discoveries regarding complex phenotypic traits. In this research, we focused on identifying genomic regions affected by different selection pressures, mainly highlighting the recent positive selection, as well as understanding the candidate genes and functional pathways associated with the signatures of selection in the Mangalarga Marchador genome.

In recent years, epigenetics has gained a central role in the understanding of the process of natural selection. It is now clear how environmental impacts on the methylome could promote methylation variability with direct effects on disease etiology as well as phenotypic and genotypic variations in evolutionary processes. To identify possible factors influencing inter-individual methylation variability, we studied methylation values standard deviation of 166 healthy individuals searching for possible associations with genomic features and evolutionary signatures.

Sporobolomyces pararoseus is regarded as an oleaginous red yeast, which synthesizes numerous valuable compounds with wide industrial usages. This species hold biotechnological interests in biodiesel, food and cosmetics industries. Moreover, the ballistospores-shooting promotes the colonizing of S. pararoseus in most terrestrial and marine ecosystems.

The inference of homologies among DNA sequences, that is, positions in multiple genomes that share a common evolutionary origin, is a crucial, yet difficult task facing biologists. Its computational counterpart is known as the multiple sequence alignment problem.

Reticulate events play an important role in determining evolutionary relationships. The problem of computing the minimum number of such events to explain discordance between two phylogenetic trees is a hard computational problem. Even for binary trees, exact solvers struggle to solve instances with reticulation number larger than 40-50.

The ever changing environmental conditions have been faced by plants through evolutionary time, among which drought is considered as the most common having an adverse effect on growth and development of the plants which is one of the major constraints on plant productivity worldwide and is expected to increase with climatic changes. The symbiotic relationship between arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi and the roots of higher plants is widespread in nature.

Wadi El Raiyan is a great depression located southwest of Cairo in the Western Desert of Egypt. Lake Qarun, located north of the study area, is a closed basin with a high evaporation rate. The source of water in the lake is agricultural and municipal drainage from the El Faiyum province. In 1973, Wadi El Raiyan was connected with the agricultural wastewater drainage system of the Faiyum province and received water that exceeded the capacity of Lake Qarun. Two hydrogeological regimes have been established in the area: (i) higher cultivated land and (ii) lower Wadi El Raiyan depression lakes.

In this paper, we propose an interactive method for DMEA-II and apply it to a spam-email detection system. In DMEA-II, an explicit niching operator is used with a set of rays which divides the space evenly for the selection of nondominated solutions to fill the solution archive and the population of the next generation.

In this paper the Bandwidth Multicoloring Problem (BMCP) and the Bandwidth Coloring Problem (BCP) are considered. The problems are solved by two genetic algorithms (GAs) which use the integer encoding and standard genetic operators adapted to the problems. In both proposed implementations, all individuals are feasible by default, so search is directed into the promising regions. The first proposed method named GA1 is a constructive metaheuristic that construct solution, while the second named GA2 is an improving metaheuristic used to improve an existing solution.

This paper presents an application of a two level mixed optimization method on a machine scheduling problem of a government owned machine shop. Where evolutionary algorithm methods are suitable for solving complex, discrete space, and non-linear, discontinuous optimization problems; classical direct-search optimization methods are suitable and efficient in handling simple unimodal problems requiring less computation.

Most Families Enrolled in Oregon’s Premium Assistance Program Lacked Employer-Sponsored Health Insurance At the time of the study (2002), the Oregon Family Health Insurance Assistance Program (FHIAP) was a State-funded program that provided premium subsidies to families at up to 170 percent of FPL. Oregon’s premium assistance program was unusual in that families who chose to enroll in FHIAP could use the subsidy to purchase employer-sponsored insurance or to buy individual coverage directly from insurers.

Following the consensus points described above, we identify the specific benefits and beneficiaries that flow from the typical MA ecosystem services categories. We also identify the spatial data layers needed to map the location of these beneficiaries. In order to enable the ARIES modelling paradigm, all benefits must meet five requirements.

The revised and updated Second Edition includes new subchapters on evolutionary Blackman-Tukey, Lomb-Scargle and Wavelet powerspectral analyses (Chapters 5.6 – 5.8), statistical analysis of point distributions and digital elevation models (Chapters 7.9 and 7.10), and a new chapter on the statistical analysis of directional data (Chapter 10). Whereas undergradu- ates participating in a course on data analysis might go through the entire book, the more experienced reader will use only one particular method to solve a specifi c problem.
