Ebook "Full-3D seismic waveform inversion: Theory, software and practice" introduces a methodology for solving the seismic inverse problem using purely numerical solutions built on 3D wave equations and which is free of the approximations or simplifications that are common in classical seismic inversion methodologies and therefore applicable to arbitrary 3D geological media and seismic source models. Source codes provided allow readers to experiment with the calculations demonstrated and also explore their own applications.

The absorption properties of protein-conjugated metallic nanoparticles are theoretically investigated based on the Mie theory and the core-shell model. Our numerical calculations show that this finding is in good agreement with previous experiments. We provide a better interpretation of the origin of optical peaks in the absorption spectrum of the nanoparticle complex system. Our results can be used in biomedical applications.

In order to better evaluate the applicability of the inverse analysis method for calculation and evaluation of hydraulic properties of unsaturated soil in more realistic conditions, a transient one – step outflow experiment for layered sands was applied in the desaturation process with the purpose to attain the profiles of suction, saturation and flow rate with time. In this study, the fine sand and medium sand were used with the same thickness of 40cm for each layer.

During the operating, the lubricated oil film pressure of hydrodynamic bearing is varied under the load apply and under the rotation speed. This pressure is one important characteristic when studying the lubrication problem for the bearing. An experimental device and the journal bearing are used to determine the pressure and the temperature of the lubricated oil film. The load is applied on the housing bearing. The journal bearing is subjected to different applied load at different velocities. Lubricant oil is circulatingly supplied via oil supply hole in the housing.

A new theory for ab initio calculation of the anharmonic Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and its parameters of hcp crystals has been developed based on the single- shell model. Analytical expressions for the anharmonic contributions to the amplitude and to the phase of EXAFS and a new anharmonic factor have been derived. The EXAFS cumulant expressions are formulated based on the anharmonic correlated Einstein model. The EXAFS function and its parameters contain anharmonic effects at high temperature and appoach those of the harmonic model at low temperature.

The aim of this work is to simulate the thermohydraulic consequences of a main steam line break and to compare the obtained results with Rossendorf Coolant Mixing Model (ROCOM) 1.1 experimental results. The objective is to utilize data from steady-state mixing experiments and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) calculations to determine the flow distribution and the effect of thermal mixing phenomena in the primary loops for the improvement of normal operation conditions and structural integrity assessment of pressurized water reactors.

One of the important requirements for GAMMA+ and AGREE is an accurate modeling capability of a bypass flow in a prismatic core. Recently, a series of air experiments were performed at Seoul National University (SNU) in order to understand bypass flow behavior and generate an experimental database for the validation of computer codes. The main objective of the present work is to validate the GAMMA+ and AGREE codes using the experimental data published by SNU.

The wave equations for describing evolution of amplitudes of the pump and Stokes pulses in the Raman cavity have been derived. Results of the theoretical modeling have been analyzed for the conditions of an experiment with the Raman laser on barium nitrate crystal under the nanosecond pulse pump at 532 nm. Numerically calculated energy characteristics of the Raman laser as well as space-time dynamics of the Stokes generation have been demonstrated to be in reasonable agreement with the experiment.

Anharmonic effective potential, effective local force constant, thermal expansion coefficient, three leading cumulants, and EXAFS (Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure) of hcp crystals have been studied. Analytical expressions for these quantities have been derived. Numerical calculations have been carried out for Zn and Cd. They show a good agreement with experiment results measured at HASYLAB (DESY, Germany) and unnegligible anharmonic effects in the considered quantities.

Analytical expressions for the ratio of the root mean square fluctuation in atomic positions on the equilibrium lattice positions and the nearest neighbor distance and the mean melting curves of bcc binary alloys have been derived. This melting curve provides information on Lindemann’s melting temperatures of binary alloys with respect to any proportion of constituent elements and on their euctectic points. Numerical results for some bcc binary alloys are found to be in agreement with experiment. Keywords: Lindemann’s melting temperature, eutectic point, bcc binary alloys. ...

Computers are one of the most important tools in any field of science and especially in physics. A student in an undergraduate lab will appreciate the help of a computer in calculating a result from a series of measurements. The more advanced researcher will use them for tasks like simulating an experiment, or solving complex systems of equations. Physics is deeply connected to mathematics and requires a lot of calculational skills. If one is only interested in a conceptual understanding of the field, or an estimate of the outcome of an experiment, simple calculus will probably suffice.

Synthesis has both an age-structured and a size/age-structured version. Both are capable of simultaneously examining data from several fisheries and several surveys, each with its own pattern of selectivity. Synthesis calculates selectivity with modified logistic functions. Parameters of these functions can take on time-specific values, thus allowing flexibility to track changes in fishery selectivity. The goodness of fit is quantified in terms of a log-likelihood function composed of independent terms for each kind of observation from each type of fishery or survey.

Computational fluid dynamics, usually abbreviated as CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. With high-speed supercomputers, better solutions can be achieved. Ongoing research yields software that improves the accuracy and speed of complex simulation scenarios such as transonic or turbulent flows.

Recent major earthquakes around the world have shown the vulnerability of infrastructure and the need for research to better understand the nature of seismic events and their effects on structures. As a result, earthquake engineering research has been expanding as more and more data become available from a large array of seismic instruments, large scale experiments and numerical simulations.
