Eye movement disorders

Patients with traumatic brain injury often develop sequelae such as eye movement disorders, including diplopia. Eye movement training is effective in diplopia management. However, few longitudinal follow-up studies have been conducted from the subacute disease stage, owing to the complexity of methods for quantifying diplopia.

Head-eye movement control deficit is an identified problem in patients with chronic neck pain, particularly in cases of whiplash associated disorders (WAD). To date, there is no evidence concerning the reliability and validity of visually assessed active head-eye movement control tests.

Many people with Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) report problems with vision, some of which may be due to impaired eye movements. Better understanding of such impaired eye movements could improve diagnostics and treatment strategies.

Eye movement evaluation is vital for diagnosis of various ophthalmological and neurological disorders. The present study proposes a novel, noninvasive, wearable device to acquire the eye movement based on a Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Sensor. The proposed Fiber Bragg Grating Eye Tracker (FBGET) can capture the displacement of the eyeball during its movements in the form of strain variations on a cantilever.

Action cues or kinetics are body movements that convey messages. Posture, arm position, hand gestures, body movements, facial expressions, and eye contact all convey a message. The message may reflect a feeling, a mood, or an underlying physiological or psychological problem. A relaxed posture with arms at the sides conveys openness, whereas a tense posture with arms crossed may reflect anger, discomfort, or mistrust. A tense, guarded posture may also indicate pain.

The chapters in this book reflect leading edge ideas, reflections and observations. Even though the modern era of sleep research evolved from Aserinksky’s observations of rapid eye movements in the sleep of babies, most work is nonetheless done in adults. There is much less formal work done in youngsters and virtually none in utero and pregnancy itself is virtually unexplored. So, Dr Miller et al’s chapter reviewing sleep in pregnancy is particularly welcome as it incorporates current thinking in how disordered sleep impacts other adult pathological processes.

Myogenic Ptosis The causes of myogenic ptosis include myasthenia gravis (Chap. 381) and a number of rare myopathies that manifest with ptosis. The term chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia refers to a spectrum of systemic diseases caused by mutations of mitochondrial DNA. As the name implies, the most prominent findings are symmetric, slowly progressive ptosis and limitation of eye movements. In general, diplopia is a late symptom because all eye movements are reduced equally. In the Kearns-Sayre variant, retinal pigmentary changes and abnormalities of cardiac conduction develop.

Treatment is justified if it has significantly improved their wellbeing and function. A combination of medication with psychological techniques is likely to be most beneficial, especially for resistant cases. Sleep disorders NORMAL SLEEP Humans spend about a third of the time asleep but why we sleep is not yet fully understood. Sleep is a state of inactivity accompanied by loss of awareness and a markedly reduced responsiveness to environmental stimuli.
