Family firm

The increasingly important role played by family firms in China’s fledging capital market calls for a better understanding of how it works and is governed. This study aims to explore how corporate governance issues in family firms are tackled from the perspective of investor protection. The thesis addresses the question by first presenting theoretical models showing the relations among investor protection, family governance, and agency costs in family firms.

ALTRUISM AND THE FAMILY FIRM : SOME THEORY Columns E and F explore the impact of varying the sample definition. In Column E, the basic model is estimated on public schools only, while in Column F the 18 MSAs that have only a single district are excluded. The choice-peer group interaction coefficient is again negative in each of these specifications, significantly so (and with a substantially larger point estimate than in the basic specifications) in the latter case.

Once re-weighted, the MEPS-HC respondents are then assumed to represent the population of California. However, MEPS-HC does not include data on immigration status, and until 2007 did not report whether an individual was born in the United States. We therefore constructed a regression model using CHIS 2009 confidential data to predict the immigration status of MEPS-HC respondents based on a variety of socioeconomic, demographic, and family characteristics.
