Farmers’ knowledge and perception

This study explores the driving factors for farmers in sustainable paddy farming in Malaysia. The research is exploratory in nature, using interview and observation approaches. Three sustainability factors are focused in this study; namely the economic, social, and environmental dimensions. The results indicate that early exposure and knowledge, education and experience in sustainable agriculture are the driving force behind shifting attitudes towards sustainable agriculture and sustaining practices.

These research findings emphasized the need for improving the understanding of climate change that could impact farmers’ livelihoods, farmers’ access to accurate near-time and medium-term weather forecasts, and thoroughly using local knowledge on climate risks and effective native adaptation measures for better adaptation and mitigation strategies and actions in rural climate-vulnerable communities in Vietnam.

This study was carried out to assess the knowledge and perception of vegetable growers regarding the appropriate knowledge on safe handling and proper use of pesticides. The results revealed that farmers’ choices of pesticides was strongly influenced by both authorized pesticide dealers and neighboring farmers.

In agriculture, the use of pesticide has been the dominant form of pest management since the 1950s to kill pest organisms including insects, weeds, fungi and nematodes. In recent times, use of pesticides in rice and wheat cultivation has increased rapidly and this scenario contributes significantly towards adverse effects on human health, environment and on overall bio-diversity as these two crops are among the major food crops grown in India and study area.

Alternate Wetting and Drying (AWD) is a simple and low cost water saving technology for helping farmers to cope up with the increasing water scarcity in irrigated environment. Irrigation is regulated by intermittent flooding in rice field with the help of Pani Pipe (perforated field tube). The study was carried out in Puri District of Odisha to ascertain the constraints perceived by the farmers that inhibit the adoption of AWD technology. All the selected farmers involved in adoption of AWD were interviewed as respondents.

The transfer of IPM in rice is undertaken in the 10 villages of Mandal and Quatbullapur Mandal of Rangareddy district of Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh. Out of these 10 villages, a total of 70 farmers from the 5 villages viz. Medchal, Atweli, Dublipur, Girmapur and Railapur were selected randomly. The IPM module for the particular region was developed, validated and promoted with the use of appropriate scouting tactics, proper identification and diagnosis of pests and diseases.

In recent years we have seen that dissemination of agricultural technologies through videos is being widely developed and used. The videos have affectively increased the capacity of the rural poor to innovate through enhanced skills and knowledge. This study examined the perception of farmers regarding different aspects of videos about soil testing, seed treatment and leaf colour chart.

A study was conducted to analyze the perception and pesticides usage practices by the small tomato growers in Ramanagara district of Karnataka using the pretested questionnaire and field observations. Detailed Information was obtained from 129 tomato growers wherein the information related to extent and types of pesticides used, knowledge about pesticides and their effectiveness was collected. Most of the respondents (98.44%) were male and most commonly farmers use 25 pesticides in tomato ecosystem.

Agriculture is the most important sector of the economy in India as it provides food and livelihood security. The industrialization of agriculture has favored the use of plenty of agrochemicals including fertilizers, pesticides, micro nutrients, and plant growth regulators in the agricultural fields. Pesticides are an integral part of modern agriculture. The use of pesticides in agriculture is obvious for the prevention of crop-damaging pests, fungus, unwanted plants (weeds) and a number of crop-eating animals like rodents etc.

The present study was executed in Palli Siksha Bhavana, Institute of Agriculture, VisvaBharati University in the year 2016-17. KVK generally deals with training programmes related to needy areas to be served to both men and women. The Subject Matter Specialists are deputed to other KVKs, Agricultural Universities, ICAR institutes and other training institutes to orient themselves with the subject. The objective was to study the perception of respondents regarding KVK intervention in agriculture.

A semi structured questionnaire based field survey was conducted to assess the socioeconomic factors, responsible for the buffalo rearing in the 11 villages of Chaka block of Allahabad. The recent study was performed on the respondents of different age group, gender, education status, factors and other characteristics that include breeds, rearing and housing strategies of the various buffalo in these different villages of Chaka region.

These practices expose the farmers, their animals and the environment to pesticide poisoning. Nevertheless, >50% of these respondents were aware of the negative effects pesticides are likely to cause to humans, animals and environment. Therefore, in order to minimize pesticide exposure and toxicity, training and awareness campaigns on pesticides use, particularly pesticide disposal should be rolled out to all the coffee growing agro-ecologies of Uganda.
