The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among genotypes for all the characters. Studies of genetic variability revealed high phenotypic and genotypic coefficients of variation, heritability and genetic advance as per cent of mean for the traits viz., number of basal tillers per plant, no. of productive tillers per plant, main ear width, grain yield per plant and grain yield per plot indicating simple selection can be practiced for improvement of these characters.

Finger millet or ragi is the primary food source for millions of people in tropical dry land regions of Africa and Asia. Two field experiments were conducted to study the genotypic variation for silicon accumulation and the effect of foliar applied silicic acid on growth, nutrient uptake and blast disease resistance of ragi. Study showed a significant varietal variation for Si accumulation with an average Si content of 1.67 % in the above ground part.

The present study was carried out to understand the extent of morphological and molecular variability between cultivated finger millet genotypes of Indian and African origin and weedy E. coracana and E. africana genotypes. A total of 28 genotypes representing cultivated varieties (E. coracana) from India and Africa, wild species (E. africana) and weedy types of E. coracana were grown in field and scored for 23 morphological traits. The African cultivated types were distinct from Indian types for many morphological traits.

M3 generation of thirty four mutant lines was developed from genotype Girge local which was irradiated with 500 Gydose of gamma rays which was studied along with three checks viz., Dapoli-1, Dapoli-2 and Dapolisafed for estimation of genetic parameters. The genetic parameters viz., Components of variances, coefficient of variations, heritability, genetic advance and genetic advance as per cent of mean were estimated for quantitative and qualitative traits. Significant differences among the entries were studied for all the traits.

Fifteen genotypes of finger millet were evaluated in a field study to assess the magnitude of genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance for yield and yield contributing traits. The analysis of variance revealed that there were significant differences among the entries for all the traits studied. A wide range of variation was recorded for plant height (cm), days 50% flowering, days to maturity, number of tillers per plant, number of fingers per year, length of finger (cm), test weight (g), yield per plant (g), straw yield per plant (g).

The present investigation was carried out to study the genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance among 137 finger millet genotypes for fifteen characters during Kharif 2018. Analysis of Variance showed significant differences for all the characters under study except for leaf width, number of panicle per plant and test weight indicating the presence of a substantial amount of genetic variability thus revealed that these genotypes have been developed from the different genetic background.
