This thesis deals with the finite element simulation of spot welded joint in crash analysis. Spot welding is a very common joining process in the automotive industry. It is cost effective and it provides a very fast production rate of automotive body components. Despite this advantage, spot welds are very susceptible to various types of loading conditions. Therefore they are prone to failure, if not designed properly, during their service life time. Therefore it is very important to understand the behaviour of spot welds and their failure characteristics.

This thesis investigates the SPH capability available in the commercial Finite Element (FE) code LS-DYNA®, for water impact problems. Experiments have been conducted on rigid wedges impacting water, which were then simulated with the SPH method. Although certain limitations were experienced with the experimental results, a positive correlation was observed with the numerical technique, thus establishing SPH as a promising method for crashworthiness design.

The final goal of the work is to provide useful recommendations and guidelines for the design of a cold plug for the emergency draining system of a molten salt reactor. Some numerical thermal simulations were performed with ANSYS mechanical (Finite Element Method) to be compared with results of the experiments and to make extrapolations for a new component to be used in a reactor.

Strain-softening material models have conventionally had a pathological mesh sensitivity in finite element simulations and composite materials are indifferent to this problem. Spurious localization is inherent to the structural problem in strain-driven softening.

In this paper, buckling behavior of aluminum cylindrical shell with rectangular cutout, subjected to axial pressure was studied by means of finite element simulations. The effects of geometric parameters (R, t, a, b and L) on the first buckling mode capacity of the shell were studied.

In this study, a 3D finite element model of an intact mandible was used for the simulation of the movement of the lower jaw and analysis of the effects of TemporoMandibular Joint (TMJ) prosthesis replacement on the jaw movement. Seven bundles of muscle fibers were inserted in their appropriate positions following anatomical data.

Portland cement concrete (PCC) / asphalt concrete (AC) bonded components are seen in both conventional pavement structures as well as overlays. Due to the environmental and traffic loads, cracks occur at the interface of the PCC and AC layers and finally, may propagate through the interface or one of the layers.

In this paper, an extended forming limit stress diagram (EFLSD) was applied to predict neck initiation failure in tube hydroforming of metal bellows. The proposed EFLSD was used in conjunction with ABAQUS/ EXPLICIT finite element simulations to predict the onset of necking in tube hydroforming of metal bellows.

The fatigue failure around rail-end-bolt holes is particularly dangerous since it leads to derailment of trains and consequently to inevitable accidents. It is well-known that the fatigue life of structural holed components, subjected to cyclic load, can be increased by generating compressive hoop stresses around the holes.

This thesis aims to develop finite element models for studying vibration of the 2D-FGM beam. These models require high reliability, good convergence speed and be able to evaluate the influence of material parameters, geometric parameters as well as being able to simulate the effect of shear deformation on vibration characteristics and dynamic responses of the 2D-FGM beam.
