Flora of Vietnam

The voucher herbarium specimens of this species collected in Vietnam are housed in the herbaria of the Vietnam National University of Forestry (VNF) and the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE). An amended morphological description of this species, accompanied by color photos, new data on ecology, and phenology are additionally provided.

The taxonomic treatment with a description is provided, along with photographs, distribution, ecology, a conservation assessment, and morphological comparison with its alliance species. It is similar to Zingiber orbiculatum and Zingiber mioga in having whitish flowers and bright yellow anthers but differs in many aspects of vegetative and reproductive characteristics. Moreover, a taxonomic key for all species of sect. Cryptanthium in Vietnam is included.

In this study, numerous Grateloupia spp. collected from coastal Vietnam and voucher specimens were used for morphological observation and phylogenetic analyses. Both analyses for samples collected at Nha Trang reveal a new record of G. yangjiangensis. The phylogenetic trees indicated that the herbarium vouchers labeled ‘G filicina’ and ‘G. livida’ from other locations of Vietnam group to G. yinggehaiensis clade. Aristolochia austroyunnanensis S. M. Hwang (family Aristolochiaceae), a species endemic to southern China, is newly recorded for the flora of Vietnam. This newly recorded species belong to subgenus Siphisia and is most similar to Aristolochia petelotii O. C. Schmidt and Aristolochia fangchi C. Wu ex L. D. Chow & S. M. Hwang. Detailed morphological descriptions and color illustrations, together with information on distribution, habitat, phenology, and taxonomic notes are given. An identification key to all known Siphisia species in Vietnam is also provided.

In this study, a unique species was collected in 2016 in Muong La Nature Reserve, Son La province, Northern Vietnam. This species differs from all other known Lonicera species in Vietnam by its recurved to coiled lower lip, and stamens and style long exserted from corolla tube.

We here report Primulina jingxiensis (Yan Liu, W. B. Xu, H. S. Gao) W. B. Xu, K. F. Chung as a new record and confirmed the occurrence of Loxostigma dongxingensis (Chun ex K. Y. Pan) Mich. Möller, H. Atkins for the flora of Vietnam which have been still known endemically to southern China from the previous treatments.

Schisandra grandiflora (Wall.) Hook. f. & Thomson (Schisandraceae: sect. Pleiostema), the specimens collected in Ha Giang, Cao Bang, and Vinh Phuc provinces, as a new recorded species for the flora of Vietnam. Strobilanthes lamiifolia (Nees) T. Anderson is reported here as a new record for the flora of Vietnam. It is morphologically allied to Strobilanthes sulfurea but differs in the shape of the leaf, bract, and bracteoles. Photographs and line drawings are given together with information on habitat, ecology and preliminary conservation assessment based on IUCN criteria.

Boehmeria pilosiuscula has two varieties, including Boehmeria pilosiuscula var. pilosiuscula distributed in north-eastern and southeastern India, Sri Lanka, Burma, Philippines, Indonesia and Boehmeria pilosiuscula var. suffruticossa distributed in China (Hainan, Taiwan), Myanmar, and Thailand. This paper provides a detailed morphological description, distribution map, ecological information, and a color photoplate of this taxon.

Aristolochia versicolor S.M. Hwang (Aristolochia subg. Siphisia), a medicinal plant, which was previously known from southern China and north-eastern Thailand, is reported herein as a new record for the flora of Vietnam. Coelogyne longipes Lindl., a species of of the Orchidaceae, is newly recorded for Vietnam’s flora. This species has previously been found in Bhutan, Northeast India (Himalayas, Sikkim, Khasia Hills); Southwest China (SE Xizang, W to SE Yunnan) and in Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. Vietnam is one of the richest areas in the diversity of Begonia (Begoniaceae) in Mainland Southeast Asia with more than 90 recorded species. In this study, we recorded an additional species of Begonia for the flora of the country. The specimens of newly recorded species, Begonia wenshanensis C.M. Hu ex C.Y. Wu & T.C. Ku were collected from 2019 to 2021 in Phia Oac – Phia Den National Park of Cao Bang Province, and Hoang Lien National Park of Lao Cai Province.

Conamomum pierreanum (Gagnep.) Skornick. & A. D. Poulsen, (Zingiberaceae), a previously known species from Thailand and Cambodia, is here reported, as a new record for Vietnam. It is similar to C. rubidum and C. odorum but differs in having a present stilt root; a shorter petiole, 2-3 cm; a larger leaf blade, oblong, 30-50 × 5-8 cm, glabrous; a globose to ovoid inflorescence, arising near the base of rhizome; tomentose outer surface of bract; a 3-toothed bracteole, outer surface hairy; and a smaller filament, yellowish and glabrous.

Taxillus thibetensis (Lecomte) Danser (Loranthaceae), a species previously known only from China, is newly recorded from Vietnam. A specimen discovered in the rainforest of Lao Cai province, Northern Vietnam was identified as Taxillus thibetensis based on both morphological and molecular data. The Vietnamese individuals of Taxillus thibetensis are closely related to T. thibetensis in China. A detailed description, illustration and data on distribution, ecology, phenology of Vietnamese Taxillus thibetensis are provided.

This species is most morphologically similar to P. politifolium C.DC. by sharing glabrous plants and fruits with a stipe, but it differs from the latter having a monoecious habit (vs. dioecious), stamens 4 (vs. 2), and a cordate leaf base with equal or subequal lobes (vs. oblique with unequal lobes).
