Foxtail millet germplasm
-
Foxtail millet (Setaria italica) has been developed into a model genetical system for deciphering architectural evolution, C4 photosynthesis, nutritional properties, abiotic tolerance and bioenergy in cereal grasses because of its advantageous characters with the small genome size, self-fertilization, short growing cycle, small growth stature, efficient genetic transformation and abundant diverse germplasm resources.

The present study was carried out with one hundred genotypes of foxtail millet procured from ICRISAT mini core collection (Upadhyaya et al., 2011) for Lysine content. The range of values for these parameters ranged from 0.49-2.45 respectively, ISe 1610 (0.49g/100g of protein) recorded least amount of Lysine whereas ISe 1187 recorded highest amount of Lysine (2.45g/100g of protein). The study also reveals great variability existing among the collection of Italian millet accessions for Lysine that can be exploited to improve the cultivars to meet the nutritional requirements of humans.

The present study was conducted for evaluation of 40 foxtail millet germplasm accessions for nutritional traits protein and carbohydrate content and its correlation with grain yield. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications at National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Regional Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad during Kharif, 2015.

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the sixty foxtail millet germplasm to access the nature and magnitude of genetic variability for yield and yield component traits. The experiment was laid out in Augmented Randomized Complete Block Design (ARCBD) at RARS, Lam, Guntur during kharif, 2018-19. The analysis of variance indicated significant differences for most of the traits viz.

In the present study, 50 germplasm accessions of foxtail millet [Setaria italica (L.) Beauv.] were evaluated based on DUS descriptors for six morphological (qualitative) traits viz., plant growth habit, plant pigmentation at auricle, inflorescence shape, inflorescence compactness, lobe compactness, seed colour and six quantitative characters viz., flag leaf: blade length (cm), flag leaf: blade width (cm), peduncle length (cm), peduncle exertion, panicle length (cm) and plant height at maturity (cm).
