French bean crop
-
French bean and Pea are an important vegetable crop consumed by human being as green pods and dry seeds due to its high nutritive value as the source of the amino acid, lysine and tryptophan as well as provides valuable dietary protein in the human diet. Considering its use as a vegetable which fits well indifferent cropping systems, there is need for improvement and development of cultivars to specific agro ecological conditions. The knowledge of genetic diversity is an important tool for any breeding programme aimed to exploit hybrid vigour.

In a pot culture experiment, the response of French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cv. Contender to phosphorus (P) was studied on 20 acidic paddy soils of Thoubal district, Manipur. All the collected soil samples were acidic in reaction varied from 4.61 to 6.26 with mean value of 5.48, organic carbon content 9.9 to 24.1 g kg-1 , CEC 9.21 to 35.71 [cmol (p+ )kg-1 ] and clay content ranged from 24.78 to 73.38 per cent. Addition of P fertilizer in the soils significantly increased the dry matter production and P uptake by the crop.

An experiment was conducted at the experimental farm of Department of Soil Science, CSKHPKV, Palampur by taking French bean crop during kharif, 2009. Biocompost and vermicompost were prepared by using cow dung and weeds and were inoculated with microbial inoculants and rock phosphate. Biocompost and vermicompost were analysed and the best one among nine composts prepared i.e. 50% each of cowdung and substrate+ 2% rock phosphate + inoculants and three vermicomposts i.e.

An investigation was carried out to study the effect of intercropping on growth, physiological aspects and yield of taro with constant spacing of 60x45 cm (sole crop), 30x15 cm between (cowpea and French bean) and 35x20 cm (ginger and turmeric) in single and double row planting system. The growth parameters of taro were recorded significantly highest under sole cropping of colocasia whereas petiole diameter was found to be significant in taro with single row ginger.

Anthracnose is one of the major diseases of French bean, which alone causes up to 50 % loss in yield. This disease is very common in cold and humid areas. Use of resistant varieties instead of harmful pesticides is an effective and organic way to protect crop from diseases.

Endophytes are the micro-organism which shares the life long relation with the host. The bacterial endophytes promote the growth directly and indirectly by several mechanisms. Keeping in mind, the present investigation has been carried out to evaluate the bacterial endophytes for their plant growth promotion in vitro condition. Four screened bacterial antagonists viz., SVC 11, BE 1, NGB 21 and M1W1 were evaluated for the germination and the vigour of French bean, brinjal and rapeseed mustard seeds. The bacteria were used individual as well as in consortium mode on the respective seeds.
