The hot-spots of transmission of food-borne zoonotic trematodes in northern Vietnam have been known as the integrated fish-livestock (VAC- Garden, Fish pond, Poultry shed) ponds. A crosssectional study was conducted in Ha Noi capital and Yen Bai province to investigate the trematode larval infections (cercariae) in freshwater snails in these areas.

Arapaima gigas (Schinz, 1822) is the largest freshwater scaled fish in the world, and an emerging species for tropical aquaculture development. Conservation of the species, and the expansion of aquaculture requires the development of genetic tools to study polymorphism, differentiation, and stock structure.

Rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, is an important fish in European freshwater aquaculture. This industry sector is dominated by small family-owned enterprises located in rural areas. A large percentage of rainbow trout produced by these small enterprises is marketed directly and killed on demand and not processed in commercial processing plants. EU and national regulations stipulate that fish shall be stunned prior to killing and slaughter.

In recent years, there is a significant expansion in commercial pond carp culture in India. While much of this development has focused on Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, there are several other states such as Orissa, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu where commercial carp culture is gaining momentum. Diseases of varied etiology are, however, a serious constraint to the success of many of the freshwater culture systems. With the intensification of culture, fish health problems have become very common in Andhra Pradesh carp culture systems.

Aquaculture products can harbor pathogenic bacteria which are part of the natural microflora of the environment. Feeding infected fish with antibiotic- medicated food is a general practice but has led to antibiotic resistance development in bacterial pathogen, resulting in a higher dose requirement for effective control, a matter of increasing public concern. Resistance of pathogens to antibiotics occurs due to the presence of β-lactamase enzyme, thereby resulting in Multiple Drug Resistance (MDR). These enzymes are present in Enterobacteriaceae such as E. coli.

In aquaculture, antibiotics have been used mainly for therapeutic purposes and as prophylactic agents. The abuse of antibiotics in aquaculture farming is a big problem. To achieve high yields and profits, many farmers are now applying intensive farming methods. The improper use of antibiotics causes the phenomenon of drug-resistant bacteria and residue accumulation of antibiotics in aquatic meat. Another reason causing antibiotics-resistant bacteria is the use of antibiotics to small quantities of aquatic feed as a growth stimulant.
