  • In order to identify and compare the effects of different gauges of polythene packing and ventilation levels on improving the keeping quality of banana fruits cv. Grand Naine, a study was conducted using polyethylene bags of 150, 200, 250 and 300 gauges with ventilations of 0.5 and 1% under ambient conditions.

  • An experiment was conducted in 2017 to study the seed quality of pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo L.) variety Punjab Samrat as aff ected by stage of fruit harvest and post harvest storage duration and to see their effect on longevity of the seed. Fruits were harvested 25, 35 and 45 days after anthesis (DAA) which were stored for 0, 10, 20 and 30 days after each date of harvesting (DAH). These seeds were stored in cloth bags under ambient conditions for 9 months.

  • The present study was undertaken to evaluate the influence of laboratory made ethylene absorbents particularly Silica gel-permanganate and Celite-permanganate mixture on postharvest quality of bitter gourd cv. Meghna-2 under ambient storage conditions (temperature 27.2-31.4°C and 69-72% RH) packed in 50µ polypropylene bags (20cm x 17cm size).

  • The effect of pre harvest spraying of calcium chloride (CaCl2) and calcium nitrate (Ca NO3) @ 0.5 and 1% on shelf life and quality attributes of mango cvs Dashehari and Amrapali was investigated. Pre harvest spray was carried out on fully grown mango trees prior to one month of harvesting following second subsequent spray, 15 days after of first one. Full ripe fruits of both the cultivars were packed in brown papers bags after washing and surface air drying and stored under ambient condition (36 ± 20C at 75 ± 3% RH).

  • Wild prickly pear (Opuntia dillenii Haw.), belonging to family Cactaceae grows mainly in arid and semi-arid climate. Its fruits are edible and sweet, which are rich source of antioxidants like phenols and betalains (betacyanins and betaxanthins). Therefore, an attempt was made to develop squash from its fruit and determine quality changes during storage. Different combinations of enzyme assisted extracted juice and sugar syrup were tried and analysed on the basis of sensory quality attributes to standardize proper combination for squash.

  • Guava cv. Khaza is known to have a poor shelf life under ambient storage conditions. But application of post-harvest treatments like Aloevera gel, Salicylic acid and Benzyladenine as post-harvest treatment followed by pre-packaging in polyethylene film of different thickness can enhance shelf life of the fruits. Hence an attempt had been made to judge the efficacy of the treatments with their interaction with packaging practices on shelf life and fruit qualities.

  • Guava is highly perishable in nature, having shelf life only 2-3 days at ambient condition which is a concern during marketing and transportation. Hence a study was under taken to extend the shelf life of guava using a chemical named hexanal which is a chemical used to delay the ripening of fruits. Hexanal treatments such as 1200 μll-1 for 4.5 h, 1400 μll-1 for 3 h and 4.5 h and 1600 μll-1 for 3 h and 4.5 h had minimum change in texture and color. Hence these treatments were selected for further studies.

  • Three sweet pepper varieties viz. Swarna, California wonder and Oroballe were treated with derivatives of salicylic acid viz. Acetyl salicylic acid (ASA), 5 Sulpho salicylic acid (5 SSA) and Gentisic acid (GA) at 0.5 mM and 1 mM concentrations under ambient condition (20±5°C) and analyzed for their change in physical and biochemical profile at 3 days interval for 9 days. Fruits treated with 1 mM acetyl salicylic acid and gentisic acid significantly delayed the senescence process by delaying the changes of weight, and firmness.

  • All the treatments showed a beneficial effect on physical, biochemical and sensory parameter of fruits in comparison to control fruits. Among all treatments, 1250 ppb 1-MCP was proved to be the best in retaining the storage quality of fruits under ambient storage. After applying 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), Aloe vera leaf extracts alone and in combination with CaCl2 and Starlight waxing treatments, fruits were stored under ambient conditions for 45 days, respectively.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of exogenous application of putrescine and spermine (Polyamine) on postharvest physiological and biochemical behavior of banana cv. Grand Naine. Mature unripe bananas were dipped in varied concentrations of putrescine (PUT) (1 mM, 3 mM and 6 mM) and spermine (SPM) (1 μM, 5 μM and 10 μM) aqueous solution and stored at cold storage (13 °C ± 1, 85 % RH). Dipping of bananas in distilled water served as control.
