Ebook "The mycota: A comprehensive treatise on fungi as experimental systems for basic and applied research (Industrial applications X, 2nd edition)" deal with the mechanisms of interactions between fungi and plants and consider pathogenic as well as mutualistic associations. Nobody involved in the manipulation of plant populations can afford to ignore the fungi, so pervasive and important are fungus/plant interactions for the well-being of plant communities, both managed and natural.

Potato dry rot disease (Fusarium spp.) is one of the most important fungal storage rots on potato tubers after harvesting. The aims of this study were to identify the Fusarium species that cause dry rot in potato storages, evaluate the most virulent Fusarium species in vitro and in vivo for fungicide sensitivity and determine the susceptibility of the cultivars. In this context, as a result of surveys carried out in potato storages of Ödemiş and Torbalı counties in İzmir province in 2015–2016; Fusarium species obtained from diseased potato tubers were identified as Fusarium sambucinum, F.

Powdery mildew caused by the fungal pathogen Erysiphe necator is a global disease that reduces yield and quality in grapes (Vitis vinifera L.). Most grape cultivars are susceptible to this pathogen and thus the selection of powdery mildew resistant cultivars is a major objective of grape breeding programs. In this study, we evaluated powdery mildew resistance of a diverse set of 28 commonly cultivated local and international V. vinifera cultivars after artificial inoculations with Erysiphe necator.

Sclerotinia Stem Rot (SSR), caused by the fungal pathogen Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is ubiquitous in cooler climates where soybean crops are grown. Breeding for resistance to SSR remains challenging in crops like soybean, where no single gene provides strong resistance, but instead, multiple genes work together to provide partial resistance. In this study, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was performed to dissect the complex genetic architecture of soybean quantitative resistance to SSR and to provide effective molecular markers that could be used in breeding programs.

Bananas (Musa spp.) are the most important fruit crops worldwide due to their high nutrition value. Fusarium wilt of banana, caused by fungal pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense tropical race 4 (Foc 4), is considered as the most destructive disease in the world and results in extensive damage leading to productivity loss. The widespread use of plant resistance inducers (PRIs), such as benzothiadiazole (BTH), is a novel strategy to stimulate defense responses in banana plants to protect against pathogens infection.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) of wheat in North America is caused mostly by the fungal pathogen Fusarium graminearum (Fg). Upon exposure to Fg, wheat initiates a series of cellular responses involving massive transcriptional reprogramming. In this study, we analyzed transcriptomics data of four wheat genotypes (Nyubai, Wuhan 1, HC374, and Shaw), at 2 and 4 days post inoculation (dpi) with Fg, using RNA-seq technology.

The fungal pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans (Lm). causes blackleg disease on canola/rapeseed in many parts of the world. It is important to use resistant cultivars to manage the disease and minimize yield losses.

Plant pathogens cause substantial crop losses in agriculture production and threaten food security. Plants evolved the ability to recognize virulence factors and pathogens have repeatedly escaped recognition due rapid evolutionary change at pathogen virulence loci (i.e. effector genes).

Stripe rust, caused by the fungal pathogen Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici (Pst), is a serious foliar disease of wheat. Identification of novel stripe rust resistance genes and cultivation of resistant cultivars are considered to be the most effective approaches to control this disease.

Pneumocystis jirovecii (P. jirovecii) is an opportunistic fungal pathogen and the role of its colonization in pulmonary diseases has become a popular focus in recent years. The aim of this study was to develop a modified loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for detection of Pneumocystis jirovecii (P. jirovecii) DNA amongst non-HIV patients with various pulmonary diseases and use it to examine the prevalence and assess the association of P. jirovecii colonization with clinical characteristics of these diseases.

The aim of the study was to assess Pseudomonas sp. for their plant growth and antagonistic activity against most probable fungal pathogens associated with apple and pear plants viz., Dematophora sp., Fusarium sp., Pythium sp. and Sclerotium sp. These isolates were phenotypically and biochemically characterized from the rhizosphere of normal and replant sites of apple and pear from different locations of two districts of H.P i.e. Chamba and Mandi.

Green gram is used as one of the important source of protein along with other pulses. The potential yield is affected by many seed borne pathogen. Stored and freshly harvested green gram seeds from different places of Odisha were collected to study the association of different fungal pathogen. Five fungal pathogens i.e. Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus, Fusarium sp, Rhizoctonia sp and a sterile mycelium were found to be associated with seeds.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) fruit is cultivated for its nutritional and medicinal values. It is however, lost due to deterioration resulting from fungal pathogens. This research was undertaken to characterize the pathogens associated with fruit rot of cucumber collected from four retail outlets located in different parts of Maiduguri Metropolis. Assessment of the diseased cucumber fruits from the locations showed that Gamboru vegetable market was the most heavily infested location with all the fungal isolates.

Most of the rice diseases are transmitted by seeds which are the important limiting factor getting good quality seeds and good yield. Stored and freshly harvested rice seed of different varieties were collected from Agricultural farm of Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology, Bhubaneswar, Odisha to study the association of different fungal pathogens. The seeds were graded on the basis of intensity of discoloration.

Onion is an important crop grown worldwide for its culinary and medicinal properties. One of the major bottlenecks in its production is the foliar blight disease. The disease is responsible for causing huge losses in its successful production. Pathogens isolated from the onion foliar blight symptomatic leaves for two successive cropping seasons were Alternaria alternata, A. porri, A. tenuissima, Stemphylium vesicarium, Cladosporium allii-cepae and Colletotrichum circinans. However, the relative occurrence of the pathogens varied during the cropping season.

Stripe rust (also called yellow rust) is a common and serious fungal disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) caused by Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici. The narrow genetic basis of modern wheat cultivars and rapid evolution of the rust pathogen have been responsible for periodic and devastating epidemics of wheat rust diseases.
