In trapped charge dating, portable spectrometers can be used to acquire spectra in the field, allowing for the assessment of radionuclide concentrations and hence the determination of dose rates at the exact location where samples are collected for dating.

  • In this work, the influences of the soil densities and the radionuclide depth distributions (RDD) on the Full Energy Peak Efficiency (FEPE) calculation of the in-situ gamma ray spectrometer using the In Situ Object Counting Systems (ISOCS) software were studied. The data of the RDDs at the sites were investigated by using laboratory HPGe gamma spectrometer.

  • This paper presented the method of determining the radioactivity of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in soil samples by gamma-ray spectrometerusing NaI (Tl) scintillation detector. The radioactivity of each isotope is calculated based on the net count rate in the energy window characteristics for the 40K, 226Ra and 232Th radioisotopes respectively.

  • The neutron flux and Cdratio are 8.72 × 106 n.cm−2 .s−1 and 134, respectively, determined by the gold foil activation method. A new PGNAA system with a HPGe detector of 58% relative efficiency and a digital spectrometer was used to detect prompt gamma rays from the 35Cl(n, γ) 36Cl reaction. In this work, relative intensities of 23 prompt γ-rays have been determined on the filtered thermal neutron beam. The present results are in good agreement with literature values and data from previous measurements.

  • The obtained results were compared with the corresponding values for cement of different countries. The calculated Raeq values of Lao PDR samples are lower than the limit of 370 Bq kg−1 set for building materials. The mean indoor absorbed dose rate is slightly lower than the population-weighted average of 84 nGy h−1 while the corresponding effective dose was 79% less than the dose of 1 mSv y−1 . The results obtained in this study show no significant radiological hazards arising from using Lao PDR cement for construction of houses.

  • The article describes a gamma ray spectrometer protected by a lead shield (Model 747E Canberra lead shield) and an active shield made of an 80 cm × 80 cm × 3 cm plastic scintillator plate in anticoincidence on top of the lead shield. The detector used as low background gamma-spectrometer is a high purity Germanium crystal of model GC2018 Canberra.
