Gender and locale differences

Women constitute a major and vital work force in agriculture. Nearly 84% of all economically active women in India are engaged in agriculture and allied activities. But the irony is that, most of the agricultural equipment and tools are designed keeping in mind men‟s physiological parameters which are substantially different from women‟s physiological parameters. Even the tools and equipment should not only be tailor made for women while they should be designed according to local conditions and demand.

The present study was under taken to assess guidance needs of male and female adolescents in urban and rural areas. The study was conducted on 200 adolescents (100 urban and 100 rural) of Government Senior Secondary Schools of Ludhiana district. The sample was further equally distributed over two genders (100males and 100 females). For the assessment of guidance need, Grewal guidance need inventory (1997) was used. The result revealed that in rural sample, males and females showed non significant difference in all dimensions of guidance needs.

The present study was conducted to assess the gender and locale differences in mental health among adolescents. The study was based on 240 adolescents (i.e. 120 rural and 120 urban) in the age range of 16-18 years. The sample was randomly drawn from four Government Senior Secondary Schools purposively selected from rural as well as urban areas of Ludhiana district. Mental Health Battery by Singh and Sengupta (2000) was used to assess the mental health of adolescents. The battery consists of 130 items related to mental health.

Views on ‘accountability’ need to place greater emphasis on (i) accountability for results (not only expenditure targets or activities undertaken), and (ii) accountability to local partners, including targeted beneficiaries, rather than only to donor ‘audit’ requirements. Related to this point, attitudes about ‘who is in control’ need to give greater appreciation to the importance of local ownership, and the practical ways in which this can be supported.
