We set out to estimate net survival trends for 10 common cancers in 279 cancer registry populations in 67 countries around the world, as part of the CONCORD-2 study. Net survival can be interpreted as the proportion of cancer patients who survive up to a given time, after eliminating the impact of mortality from other causes (background mortality).

This longitudinal study classified groups of children experiencing different trajectories of student-teacher relationship quality over the transition from preschool into school, and determined the strength of the association between different student-teacher relationship trajectories and childhood mental health problems in the second year of primary school.

This thesis addresses two neural network based control systems. The first is a neural network based predictive controller. System identification and controller design are discussed. The second is a direct neural network controller. Parameter choice and training methods are discussed. Both controllers are tested on two different plants. Problems regarding implementations are discussed. First the neural network based predictive controller is introduced as an extension to the generalised predictive controller (GPC) to allow control of non-linear plant.

Targeting households and firms: influencing location choices. The demand side of balanced urban development involves measures to influence where households and firms choose to locate in an urban area. Although they are not yet well established, particularly in the developing countries, policies to influence location choices have led to some interesting experiments, including a “reverse” zoning scheme in the Netherlands (the “ABC” policy) and a mortgage instrument based on “location efficiency” in the United States.
