Genus Onobrychis

The pollen size and morphology of 20 Onobrychis Adans. taxa from Turkey were studied using both light and scanning electron microscopy. Of the taxa studied, Onobrychis fallax Freyn & Sint. and Onobrychis elata Boiss. & Balansa showed the smallest size of pollen grains, while the largest were found in Onobrychis aequidentata (Sibth. & Sm.) d’Urv.

Results about a phylogenetic analysis of the genus Onobrychis Mill., tribe Hedysareae DC. are presented. The systematic knowledge of tribe Hedysareae is still incomplete, with difficult circumscription of genera and species. Analyses were undertaken using both nuclear (ITS) and chloroplast (matK) markers for a set of 78 accessions covering 41 Onobrychis species, besides previously sequenced Hedysareae accessions.

Little is known about the taxonomic relationships of the genus Onobrychis (Fabaceae). To study inter- and intraspecific variations and the relationships among the species, 102 accessions (33 species) of the genus Onobrychis were evaluated using 22 intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers.

Turkey is of great importance for the biodiversity of genus Onobrychis Adans. and hosts 55 species that are adapted to dry and poor environments. This study was conducted to evaluate 35 Onobrychis taxa in terms of 1000-seed weight, germination percentage, mean germination time, and hard and swollen seeds and to determine the suitability of mechanical scarification for dormancy breaking in species with hard or impermeable seed coats.
