Grains by farm women

In rural India, the percentage of women who depend on agriculture for their livelihood is as high as 84%.Apart from participation in actual cultivation; women participate in various forms of processing and marketing of agricultural produce. Women accounted for 93% of total employment in dairy production. To begin with training programmes were started to self-help groups (SHG) on labour saving equipment, processing, value addition and storage of grains followed by model processing units establishment in rural areas. Workshops and melas were also conducted for empowerment of women in SHGs.

Post-harvest grain storage operation is a concluding activity in agriculture and mostly performed by rural women to secure the food grains and reduce the post-harvest losses. Post-harvest losses occur from farm to ultimate consumption. These losses might be either due to lack of awareness on the part of rural women about the scientific grain storage methods, improved storage practices and improved storage structures.

Rural Indian women are extensively involved in agricultural activities. Grain cleaning and grading for women in rural area is a big problem because they use traditional sieve for cleaning and grading manually in sitting posture. This posture increases the fatigue and drudgery of farm women while cleaning and grading which results in aches and pains in the back and cervical region. This is time consuming method and output realized is less.

The present study was planned to assess the drudgery and postural discomfort level on the performance of hanging grain cleaner in comparison to the traditional sieve. Thirty farm women of adopted villages of KVK Ratlam were randomly selected for the study. The results of the study indicated that the amount of energy consumed or spent by the farm women were observed to be lower while performing selected activities with the improved technologies as compared to the adopted traditional methods.
