  • Antifungal activities of the three mushrooms Pleurotus pulmonarius, Pleurotus florida and Schizophyllum commune ethanol extracts were evaluated against some plant pathogenic fungi (Aspergillus flavus, Aspergillus niger and Alternaria solani, Colletotrichum graminicola, Fusarium oxysporum) by using agar well diffusion method. Minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was investigated for 1-20 mg/ml concentration to find out the lowest concentration of the sample that inhibits the growth of the test organisms.

  • In recent years, twister disease of onion has become epidemic in coastal tract and other onion growing districts of Karnataka which caused heavy loss. Survey carried out during kharif and rabi/summer 2011-12 and 2012-13 revealed typical symptoms of the disease twisting of leaf, neck with blight as well as dieback (anthracnose), scanty root system with galls and showing fungal growth was noticed. Artificial inoculations of onion seedlings with Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, Fusarium oxysporum, Meloidogyne spp. alone and in combinations expressed twister disease symptoms.

  • Anthracnose incited by Colletotrichum graminicola (Ces) Wils. is one of the most destructive and wide spread disease, causing yield losses of 21-70 per cent. The fungus C. graminicola cause anthracnose and leaf blight disease in sorghum. Sorghum plants affected with C. graminicola show small red coloured spots on both surface of leaf; the centre of the spot is white in colour encircled by red, purple or brown margins. Numerous small black dots are seen on the white surface of the lesions which are the fruiting bodies (acervuli) of the fungus.

  • In the present study, the efficiency of 15 day old culture filtrate (nonvolatile compound) of 20 Trichoderma isolates was evaluated at 10% and 25% concentration using poison food technique against mycelial growth C. graminicola. All the 19 isolates of Trichoderma asperellum and one isolate of Trichoderma harzianum were significantly reduced the mycelia growth of C. graminicola over control at 10% and 25% concentration. The maximum reduction of mycelia growth of C. graminicola at 10% and 25% of T4 isolate which recorded 68.18% and 80.68% inhibition radial growth respectively.
