Leucaena leucocephala, as a shrub legume rich in condensed tannins, is a candidate for the integrated control of gastrointestinal parasitic pathogen nematodes. Here, we investigated the anthelmintic potential of the nutraceutical L. leucocephala, transformed into pellets, against Haemonchus contortus.

The ewe lamb nutritional and physiological state interfere with the ovarian environment and fertility. The lack or excess of circulating nutrients reaching the ovary can change its gene expression. A protein deficiency in the blood caused by an Haemonchus contortus abomasal infection is detrimental to the organism’s development during puberty.

Infections with helminths cause an enormous disease burden in billions of animals and plants worldwide. Large scale use of anthelmintics has driven the evolution of resistance in a number of species that infect livestock and companion animals, and there are growing concerns regarding the reduced efficacy in some human-infective helminths.

Occurrence of haemonchosis and sudden death among goats were observed in Livestock Farm Complex (Goat Farm Unit), Lakhimpur College of Veterinary Science that comprises a flock of 33 animals (22 numbers of Beetal crossbred and 11 numbers of Assam Hill Goat). The incidences were recorded during August-September, 2020. The morbidity rate of haemonchosis in the present study was recorded 66.67 % (22 nos.) and mortality rate was 27.28% (9 nos.).

Evaluation of anthelmintic efficacy of Nicotiana tabacum against gastrointestinal nematodes of goats
The present study was planned to evaluate the anthelmintic efficacy of crude powder (CP), crude aqueous (CAE) and crude methanolic (CME) extracts of Nicotiana tabacum leaves against common gastrointestinal nematodes of goats using three in-vitro tests viz. adult motility test (AMT), egg hatch assay (EHA) and larval paralysis test (LPT) and one invivo test using faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). AMT was conducted against freshly collected adult Haemonchus contortus...

The present study was planned to know the status of anthelmintic resistance in gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes of two organized sheep and one goat farms of subHimalayan region of northern India using faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). Three anthelmintics, fenbendazole (FBZ), tetramisole HCl (TMS) and ivermectin (IVM) of benzimidazole, imidazothiazole and macrocyclic lactone groups, respectively were tested at each farm.

A study was set out to investigate the distribution of gastrointestinal nematode parasites in sheep farms of Hassan district, Karnataka and to ascertain which species are involved in the anthelmintic resistance. In the study 26 farms were treated with fenbendazole and 19 farms were treated with ivermectin. The pre and post treatment faecal cultures were prepared for each farms.

Haemonchus contortus is one of the most important nematode species responsible for huge economic losses to small-ruminant farming in India and world over. Control is primarily based on use of anthelmintics. Over reliance on and non-judicious use of anthelmintics has lead to development of anthelmintic resistance. This wide spread anthelmintic resistance has forced to look for alternate control measures. Vaccination can significantly protect livestock against and lower the economic losses incurred due to H. contortus. Different antigens have been tried with variable success.

The study was conducted at Department of Veterinary Clinical Medicine, Ethics and Jurisprudence. The polyherbal tablet comprising Artimisia maritima, Butea frondosa, Vernonia anthelmintica and Holarrhena antidysentrica was prepared and its anthelmintic efficacy and effect on body weight was studied on goats naturally infected with Haemonchus contortus.

Parasitic diseases rank among the most prevalent infectious diseases. Chemotherapy forms the mainstay for control of parasites. Availability of antiparasitic drugs is limited due to high cost of development of newer drugs and rapid pace of development of resistance.

A total of 60 animals which include thirty sheep and 30 goats of Charkhi Dadri district, Haryana with egg per gram of more than or equal to 150 were divided into four groups i.e. G1, G2 of goats and S1, S2 of sheep, each of 15 animals. G1 and S1 was dosed with ivermectin, recommended dose in sheep and double dose in goats. Group G2 and S2 served as untreated control. Faecal egg count on day of treatment (0 day) and 14th day post treatment were determined by the modified McMaster technique.

Among all the gastrointestinal nematodes belonging to family Trichostrongylidae, Haemonchus contortus is the most prevalent and highly pathogenic nematode causing severe loss to small ruminant production system. Parasite causes alterations in various physiological parameters with disturbances in haemato-biochemical blood profile. Experiment was conducted in eighteen (n=18) non-descript sheep that were randomly divided into two groups, infected (Group-A) and (Group-B) the negative control. Group- A animals were infected with 10,000 L3 of H.contortus.

An adult female goat was presented for the post-mortem examination to the Department of Veterinary Pathology, College of Veterinary Science & A.H., Anjora, Durg, Chhattisgarh. The animal had emaciated body, pale mucous membranes with the history of anorexia and loss of body weight. Upon necropsy, the internal organs were found extremely pale, which was suggestive of anaemia. Liver of the animal was hemorrhagic and enlarged. Abomasum of the animal was found filled with the blood-sucking parasites Haemonchus contortus spp. and severe abomasitis was observed.

Small ruminant farming serves as a major source of livelihood in rural areas where about 70% of the population is dependent on agricultural and livestock related activity. In spite of so high potential of these animals, production is significantly constrained due to disease caused by variety of pathogens that include bacteria, virus, protozoa and helminths. Among all these pathogens, parasites are the major cause of sub clinical cases which are not readily diagnosed in field conditions hence affecting production and economic status.
