Graduation thesis "Students’ perceptions on their autonomy in English language learning: A study at Hai Phong Private University (HPU)" is to find ways to help first-year students of Hai Phong Private University promote their autonomy in learning English.More specifically my research focuses on methods of self-studying English. Hopefully these will be the methods to help first-year students be more confident in self-study.

Speaking skill is one of the most necessary skills to communicate in the real life. In learning a foreign language, it is more and more important to learn this skill. This study aims to enhance the oral communication skills (conversations) of HPU (Hải Phòng Private University) first-year English majors. The sample of the study consists of 25 students (20 female students and 5 male students from NA2101); all of them are juniors students at English department (ED) at HPU. I have used random sample method.

The aim of this study is finding out helpful games for teaching reading lessons which attract students’ attention to the lesson. The students will feel interested, enjoyable and funny when they take part in the reading lesson and it's helpful for students to improve their reading skill in which the study focuses on finding the reality of the first year English majors’ learning English reading and giving them the suggestions for better reading. The author wants to change the students’ attitude on reading English and let them find English reading more interesting.

In recent years, a raising problem encountered by students in general and first year ones in particular in the foreign languages department at Hai Phong Private University is extremely bad listening comprehension. This leads to a serious subsequence is that student’s language proficiency is low as well as learning and teaching have to face many difficulties due to the reason that listening skill is an essential instrument when learning communication in any another languages.

Motivation factors are regarded as one of the most important parts in learning English, especially speaking skill. A positive motivation factor not only helps students have a good performance in learning English but also improves their speaking skill. Accordingly, this thesis concentrates on investigating the factors influencing third year English-major students’ motivation to speak English in English classes at Hai Phong Private University and gives some suggestions for enhancing the positive factors and reducing the negative ones.
