Engineers use the concepts and methods of mechanics of solids in designing and evaluating tools, machines, and structures, ranging from wrenches to cars to spacecraft. The required educational back ground for these includes courses in statics, dynamics, mechanics of materials, and related subjects.

The great advantage of steel as an engineering material is its versatility, which arises from the fact that its properties can be controlled and changed by heat treatment. Thus, if steel is to be formed into some intricate shape, it can be made very soft and ductile by heat treatment; on the other hand, heat treatment can also impart high strength.

The frequency response of a fixed linear system is typically represented graphically, using one of three types of frequency response plots. A polar plot is simply a plot of the vector H in the complex plane, where Re is the abscissa and Im is the ordinate. A logarithmic plot or Bode diagram consists of two displays.

The Department of Energy Fundamentals Handbook entitled Mechanical Science was prepared as an information resource for personnel who are responsible for the operation of the Department's nuclear facilities. Almost all processes that take place in the nuclear facilities involve the use of mechanical equipment and components. A basic understanding of mechanical science is necessary for DOE nuclear facility operators, maintenance personnel, and the technical staff to safely operate and maintain the facility and facility support systems.

The RP process begins when the object is drawn on the screen of a CAD workstation or personal computer to provide the digital data base. Then, in a post-design data processing step, computer software slices the object mathematically into a finite number of horizontal layers in generating an STL (Solid Transfer Language) file. The thickness of the “slices” can range from 0.0025 to 0.5 in. (0.06 to 13 mm) depending on the RP process selected. The STL file is then converted to a file that is compati- ble with the specific 3D “printer” or processor that will construct the model.

The characteristicsof a vector are the magnitude, the orientation, and the sense. The magnitudeof a vector is speci®ed by a positive number and a unit having appropriate dimensions. No unit is stated if the dimensions are those of a pure number. The orientationof a vector is speci®ed by the relationship between the vector and given reference lines and=or planes. Thesenseof a vector is speci®ed by the order of two points on a line parallel to the vector. Orientation and sense together determine the directionof a vector.

This text provides the student and professional mechanical engineer with a reference text of an essentially practical nature. It is uncluttered by text, and extensive use of illustrations and tables provide quick and clear access to information. It also includes examples of detailed calculations on many of the applications of technology used by mechanical and production engineers, draughtsmen and engineering designers.

Learning involves acquiring knowledge, which is encouraged in all traditions. For example, the Quran urges people to seek knowledge and to use it for the well being of society: “My Lord, increase me in knowledge”, Al-Quran 20:114. Knowledge should be applied in a safe, responsible and ethical manner not only to benefi t us personally but also to improve the lot of the people we live with. It is also a duty to ensure that our surrounding habitat is not endangered. Th is sometimes requires knowledge of the local culture to help achieve a desirable outcome.

Ours is a very young profession: when the first edition of the Instrument Engineers’ Handbook (IEH) came out, Marks’ Mechanical Engineers’ Handbook was in its fifth edition, and Perry’s Chemical Engineers’ Handbook was in its sixth! Now, as we are starting to work on the fourth edition of the IEH, we are already in a new millenium. But while our profession is young, we are also unique and special.
