  • This paper investigates the market-risk-hedging effectiveness of the Taiwan Futures Exchange (TAIFEX) stock index futures using daily settlement prices for the period from July 21, 1998 to December 31, 2010. The minimum variance hedge ratios (MVHRs) are estimated from the ordinary least squares regression model (OLS), the vector error correction model (VECM), the generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity model (GARCH), the threshold GARCH model (TGARCH), and the bivariate GARCH model (BGARCH), respectively.

  • This study proposes the so-called linguistic time series, in which words with their own semantics are used instead of fuzzy sets. By this, forecasting linguistic logical relationships can be established based on the time series variations and this is clearly useful for human users. The effect of the proposed model is justified by applying the proposed model to forecast student enrollment historical data.

  • This study uses the Rogers International Commodity Index (RICI) for composite commodities and RICI-Agriculture (RICA), RICI-Energy (RICIE), and RICI-Metals (RICIM) indices to examine the relationship between various commodity and stock markets. The empirical results indicated that stable long-term relationships exist between some commodity and stock markets, and that commodity indices generally lead stock market indices. Thus, in a number of countries/regions, investors can predict fluctuations in stock prices using variations in commodity indices.

  • This paper investigates the international spillover effect of U.S. monetary policy changes on non-U.S. bank stock returns. Our dataset covers 442 non-U.S. banks in 57 countries for 1994-2007. We find that there exists an inverse relationship between non-U.S. bank stock returns and unexpected changes in the U.S. federal funds rate target. Our study provides strong evidence that the sensitivity of non-U.S. bank stock returns varies with regard to the nature and context of monetary policy changes, bank-level characteristics, and country-level institutional factors.

  • Trees of Shan-i-Punjab peach were planted at two spacings viz., 5m x 2m and 5m x 3m and were trained to four training systems viz., Y shaped, Hedge row, Espalier and V trellis. Maximum mean flower bud density (13.95) was recorded in V trellis trained trees and minimum mean flower bud density was recorded in Hedge row trees. Fruiting characters including fruit set, fruit retention, fruiting pattern was maximum in Espailer trained trees and minimum in Hedge row trees.

  • The paper summarizes research results of the use of different types of grasses; their use as important and effective vegetative hedge that when grown on the contour significantly reduces the flow of sediment from eroding sites and reduces runoff, both simultaneously, and at a low cost, compared to more traditional engineered practices. Various grasses have unique characteristics and capability to reduce run off, bind soil at slope over a wide range of site conditions.

  • Barleria cristata L. ‘Alba’ is a white flowering perennial shrub used as a hedge and specimen plant in landscaping and has potential of being grown as a pot plant too. The study was conducted on this plant to ascertain the effect of benzyl adenine (BA), paclobutrazol with pinching (shoot decapitation) for making it a presentable pot plant.

  • The objective of this paper is to explore the corporate cash holding policy. Our focus is particularly on the relationship between cash holding and leverage. We will investigate this task in a particular context which is the Tunisian economy: Jasmine Revolution. We present evidence of a significant non-monotonic relationship between cash holding and leverage. Initially, a substitution effect between leverage and cash holding is found for a low level of leverage.

  • This project examines whether the fair value information under SFAS ( 157 affects corporate credit risk. Moreover, I further investigate whether managers change their risk management behavior driven by fair value measurement. Finally, in light of the evidence offered by the prior studies indicating that better corporate governance will lead to better risk management, this study expects that the relationship between fair value information and risk management may be moderated by corporate governance.

  • The goal of this research was to investigate the controversy surrounding the inability of SFAS 133 an amendment of SFAS 161 to portray the economics of hedging. This research examined whether or not BHCs’ design of hedge effectiveness tests was determined by the concern of the additional earnings volatility possibly evolved from economic hedges that do not qualify for hedge accounting.

  • In this paper, we introduce a hedge-algebras-based methodology in vibration control of structural systems to design fuzzy controllers, referred to as hedge-algebras-based controllers (HACs). In this methodology, vague linguistic terms are not expressed by fuzzy sets, but by inherent order relationships between vague terms existing in a term-domain. Semantically quantifying mappings (SQMs), which preserve semantics-based order relationships in termdomains, are defined in a close relationship with the fuzziness measure and the fuzziness intervals of vague terms.

  • This paper answers that question by presenting a fuzzy rule based classifier design method based on hedge algebras with a pure hedge algebras classification reasoning method. The experimental results over 17 real world datasets are compared to the existing methods based on hedge algebras and fuzzy sets theory showing that the proposed method is effective and produces good results.

  • In this paper, three controllers including OFCHA (optimal fuzzy control using hedge algebras - HAs), FCHA (fuzzy control using HAs) and CFC (conventional fuzzy control) are designed. Our attention is paid to the stability in the vertical position of a damped-elastic-jointed inverted pendulum subjected to a time periodic follower force. Different values of the pendulum length are considered. Simulation results are exposed to illustrate the effect of OFCHA in comparison with FCHA and CFC.

  • This paper presents the solution to problems of fuzzy ranking Vietnamese documents using approach of Hedge Algebra based on envaluating an accordance of found documents by heuristic criteria. These criteria firstly are evaluated by degree of importance (weight) and then are combined following some aggregation operator to define final evaluation unique number, that will be used for sorting the documents. The experimental results are presented to show the effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Under hedgerow intercropping (BambooHed), bamboo prevents erosion and improves soil fertility. The bamboo products (mainly from Tre gai and Hop species) harvested from the hedges provide farmers with important income as well as material for household.

  • The increasing globalisation of financial markets led companies in many countries to apply from 2005 the IFRS principles. The main goal of IFRS is to safeguard investors by achieving uniformity and transparency in the accounting principles. One of the most challenging aspects of the IFRS rules is the accounting treatment of derivatives, a challenge that has strengthened the relationship between risk management and accounting.

  • Fourth, this study applies new methodologies which have never been applied to emerging markets. For instance, Chapter 5 explores the determinants of risk-adjusted mutual fund performance using multidimensional regression in addition to the common approach, which is to use a zero-cost trading strategy. This alternative methodology can explore several factors simultaneously while controlling the effect between one and another. Using the two methods allows us to examine determinants of fund performance statistically and economically and it provides more meaningful results.
