Striped catfish or Vietnamese catfish mainly contributes to national aquaculture exports. However, bacterial diseases result in the decrease of striped catfish production efficiency and the most popular disease is hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Aeromonas hydrophila. Bacteriophages or bacterial viruses have been investigated as alternative biological agents to control pathogenic bacterial infections in aquaculture for many decades.

Pasteurella multocida is the etiological agent responsible for several diseases in a wide range of hosts around the world and thus, causes serious economic losses. Acute septicemia associated with capsular type B P. multocida has recently emerged in Europe and continuous outbreaks of these acute processes have been described in Spain since they were first detected in pigs in 2009 and cattle in 2015.

The study was undertaken to evaluate the protein levels in rabbits affected by a lysate vaccine developed from Pasteurella multocida grown under iron-restricted conditions and lysed by a bacteriophage. Serum proteins include immunoglobulins and complement which mediate humoral immune response and an assessment of protein levels can be of clinical relevance being an indicator of humoral immune response. Two groups of rabbits were immunized with lysate vaccine (LV) and conventional alum precipitated killed HS vaccine (CV) and blood was collected at various days post – immunization (DPI).

As infection with Pasteurella multocida is common in cattle and buffalo, a monoclonal antibody based sandwich ELISA kit was developed for its rapid and easy detection. The test was optimized and standardized so that maximum concordance could be maintained with the standard procedures of hemorrhagic septicemia diagnosis recommended by the WHO expert committee. HS-1, a Pasteurella multocida type B specific monoclonal antibody developed in mice was used as tracing antibody to capture P. multocida serotype B:2 in a sandwich ELISA.

Viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) is one of the most serious pathogens of finfish worldwide in terms of its wide host-range, pathogenicity, disease course, and mortality rates. The disease was first documented in the 1930s in Europe in association with heavy losses in rainbow. Data collected over 50 years show that VHSV is a virus of marine origin: its ability to alternate between marine and freshwater environments remains an enigma which requires further investigation. In 2003, VHSV invaded the Laurentian Great Lakes basin causing devastating losses.

Currently, however, the sustainable development of striped catfish farming is being affected by bacterial pathogen infections, of which hemorrhagic septicemia caused by Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria is one of the most common diseases.
