  • Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a major cause of acute hepatitis in humans worldwide and have high burden in the resource-limited countries. Better knowledge of the epidemiology of hepatitis in animals in Africa can help to understand the epidemiology among humans. The objective of this study was to summarize the prevalence of HEV infection and distribution of HEV genotypes among animals in Africa.

  • Thalassemia is one of commonest hereditary disease worldwide, prevalent in humid climates and affects all races. The Transfusion Dependent Thalassemias require regular blood transfusion to survive. The thalassemia patients require lifelong blood transfusion on regular basis- usually administered every 2 to 5 weeks. Due to regular blood transfusion, transfusion transmitted disease e.g. Hepatitis B Virus (HBV), Hepatitis C virus (HCV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections can occur.

  • The effect of fresh juice extract of Azadirachta indica on lipid profile and hepatic function of Plasmodium berghei infected albino mice were investigated. Thirty adult male mice were placed in five groups of six mice each, acclimatized for 7 days and used for the study. Group A was normal control and had free access to feed and water while groups B to E were infected with Plasmodium berghei, and confirmed of parasitamia on the third day. Groups C, D and E were further given standard anti malaria drug (5 mg/kg body weight of Artesunate), 4.3ml/kg and 8.

  • A 21-year-old man from India presented with acute hepatitis associated with a 1-week history of abdominal pain, pruritus, and dark urine. Over a 7-day admission, the patient’s acute hepatitis evolved into acute liver failure with low-grade encephalopathy, markedly elevated transaminases, bilirubin, and impaired hepatic synthetic function. He was eventually diagnosed with acute hepatitis E virus (HEV) and was transitioned to supportive management. Acute HEV is a rare cause of acute liver failure.

  • Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) both are transmitted through the fecal–oral route and cause self-limiting acute viral hepatitis, and poses a major public health problem in India. This study was undertaken to determine prevalence of HAV and HEV in patients presenting with acute viral hepatitis and to study its seasonal trend. A retrospective study conducted in Department of Microbiology, SMS Medical College and attached Hospitals, Jaipur, Rajasthan.

  • Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is one of the most important agent causing transfusion transmitted infections in multitranfused patients. HBV-DNA is a concern for transmission from transfusion or transplantation in serologically negative blood for HBV i.e., occult hepatitis B (OHB). The aim of this study is to find out the prevalence of HBV infection in multitransfusd patients including OHB infections. The present study was conducted in 200 multitransfused patients attending the haematology/thalassemia OPD. Blood sample were collected and tested for HBsAg, Anti HBs, Anti HBc and HBV DNA by DNA PCR.

  • Hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus share common modes of transmission i.e. by blood and blood products mainly and also noticed in drug addicts. Hepatitis B virus and Hepatitis C virus have been recognized as a major pathogen causing significant morbidity and mortality throughout the world including India. The most important markers for HBV and HCV infection are HBsAg and Anti HCV antibodies respectively. Detection of infection markers for these agents is a major challenge in a resource poor setting.

  • Hepatitis E virus is the major cause of non A enteral hepatitis. It is usually transmitted by fecal oral route, but infection is possible after bloodproducts transfusion and during birth. The medical literature data are controversial whether dialysis patients are at higher risk of infection. The aim of the study was to investigate the distribution of HEV infection (seroprevalence) in hemodialysis patients from Pazardzhik region, Bulgaria. 102 patients (58.8% men and 41.2% - women) on dialysis treatment were tested. The mean age of the men was 58.7 years, of the women – 59.7.

  • The term viral hepatitis refers to primary infection of liver by any one of the heterogeneous group of hepatitis virus which currently consists of types A, B, C, D, E and G Hepatitis virus infection occurs as an acute illness. HBsAg (Hepatitis B surface antigen) is the most common marker of infection, which is present in high concentrations in early acute infections and is continued to be produced in chronic disease. The present study is undertaken because there is paucity of data indicating prevalence of Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C among pre-operative patients admitted in our hospital.

  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected patients are known to be exposed to major liver complications i.e. cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. In addition, many extrahepatic manifestations including rheumatologic disorders have been reported in up to two-third of HCV infected patients. These manifestations include frank auto-immune and rheumatic diseases (such as arthralgia, myalgia, arthritis, sicca syndrome and vasculitis) which may dominate the course of infection.
