Hepatoma cells in vitro

We succeeded in large volume artificial cultivation of Onygena corvina. The appearance (shape, color, and size) of fruiting bodies of cultured bacteria was almost the same as that of wild one. We screened their metabolites for antiproliferative activities against nine human cancer cells in vitro. Culture filtrates (metabolite-containing media) of O. corvina were lyophilized and resuspended in phosphate buffer to investigate them in vitro. As a result, these metabolites effectively inhibited the growth of some cancer cells in a concentration-dependent manner.

We previously reported that modulation of cytokeratin18 induces pleomorphism of liver cells, higher cell motility, and higher drug sensitivity to sorafenib treatment of hepatoma cells. These relationships were established by in vitro experiments.

β-Glucan is a natural polymer, which is widely studied due to its multiple immunomodulatory properties. In addition, recent findings indicate potent antitumor properties of β-glucan. Saccharomyces cerevisiae, baker’s yeast, is one of the commonly used sources of β-1,3-glucan. The aim of this work was to investigate S. cerevisiae β-glucan immunomodulatory activity against cancer cells.
