Herbarium specimens

The voucher herbarium specimens of this species collected in Vietnam are housed in the herbaria of the Vietnam National University of Forestry (VNF) and the Komarov Botanical Institute (LE). An amended morphological description of this species, accompanied by color photos, new data on ecology, and phenology are additionally provided.

In this study, numerous Grateloupia spp. collected from coastal Vietnam and voucher specimens were used for morphological observation and phylogenetic analyses. Both analyses for samples collected at Nha Trang reveal a new record of G. yangjiangensis. The phylogenetic trees indicated that the herbarium vouchers labeled ‘G filicina’ and ‘G. livida’ from other locations of Vietnam group to G. yinggehaiensis clade. In the paper, the name T. rhizomatosum Galloway & Schmidt is recorded as a new synonym of T. cordifolium S. Y. Hu, while T. khonkaenensis is confirmed as a separated species in the genus Typhonium.

Tragopogon porrifolius occurs in Turkey with 3 taxonomically confused subspecies: T. porrifolius subsp. eriospermus, T. porrifolius subsp. longirostris, and T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus. In the present paper, T. porrifolius subsp. abbreviatus endemic to Turkey is raised at specific level based on morphological and molecular analysis. After detailed assessment of original herbarium specimens and literature studies, we found that this name is not typified yet.

We studied the application of the neglected name Centaurea leucolepis DC., concluding, by examination of the literature and original material, that the associated taxon is C. corensis Vals. et Filig., endemic to Campania region (southern Italy) and introduced into Sardinia. The name by Candolle is legitimate and it is here lectotypified by a specimen kept at G. In addition, after field surveys and herbarium searches, we suggest that this taxon should be considered as a subspecies of C. deusta Ten.

This study aims to compile a detailed checklist of grammitid specimens kept in the Biological Museum Herbarium under VNU University of Science (HNU). The study adopted the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group classification (PPG I 2016) to classify these specimens and fifteen references were used to identify their scientific names.

Petrocosmea Oliver (Gesneriaceae) currently comprises 38 species with four non-nominate varieties, nearly all of which have been described solely from herbarium specimens. However, the dried specimens have obscured the full range of extremely diverse morphological variation that exists in the genus and has resulted in a poor subgeneric classification system that does not reflect the evolutionary history of this group.

The unidentified lichen specimens collected about 50 years ago and stored in the herbarium of the Faculty of Science, the University of Istanbul (ISTF) were examined taxonomically and identified. This lichen collection includes 67 species, some of which are rare and interesting for the collection sites. Most of the samples are from Istanbul and its surroundings, but some are from several provinces in Anatolia.

Natural sources used as folk medicines in Merzifon were investigated in this study. It was determined that 35 plant and 4 animal species together with 3 animal and 1 inorganic sources are being used as various preparations of folk medicines in Merzifon area. All the collected medicinal plants were identified and voucher specimens were deposited in the Herbarium of Hacettepe University, Faculty of Pharmacy (HUEF).

The specimens of genus Prosaptia C. Presl (family Grammitidaceae) stored in the Herbarium of the University of Science under Vietnam National University were studied with the traditional morphological methods. The study provides descriptions, illustrations and comparisons of 6 species of genus Prosaptia, namely P. alata, P. barathrophylla, P. intermedia, P. pectinata, P. obliquata and P. contigua. Prosaptia contigua (G.Forst.) C.Presl has been identified as a new record for the flora of Vietnam.

An interesting chasmophytic Teucrium specimen was collected from Siirt, SE Turkey. It was identified according to the Flora of Turkey as T. paederotoides but with some doubt about certain characters. It was identified as T. chasmophyticum without any doubt from Flora Iranica. Because of some indistinct points between these 2 taxa, the recently described taxon was re-evaluated.

An improved protocol for the isolation of DNA from herbarium material of some lichen specimens is described. The isolated DNA is suitable for PCR reactions for DNA sequence analysis. The hexadecyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) based protocol defined in this study provides a number of advantages, mainly speed and reliability.

Bellevalia vuralii B.Şahin & Aslan is described as a new species of Bellevalia from southeast Turkey. As well as its morphological characteristics and classification with regards to sections, its description, ecology, and relationship with related species are presented and discussed. The somatic chromosome number of these species was defined to be 2n = 8.

In this article, Alpinia graminifolia - a new record species for Vietnam flora was discovered in the mountain of Northern Vietnam (Quang Ninh province and Bac Giang province). Specimens were collected in Quang Ninh province (Uong Bi City, Thuong Yen Cong commune, Yen Tu mountain) and Bac Giang province (Son Dong dist., Thanh Luan commune), deposited at the Vietnam National Museum of Nature (VNMN), herbarium of Hanoi University of Pharmacy (HNIP), herbarium of Institute of Ecology and Biological Resources (HN).
